I have to admit, until last month I was among the Hatchimals uninitiated. That is, until the very last thing my son and I did on The Outside (ie, pre-quarantine), which was attend a Hatchimals preview event here in Nashville in early March, aka precisely one hundred years ago. And boy am I glad we did, because it turns out Hatchimals — like so many of their “opening them is the best part” toy brethren — are one seriously amazing item to have on hand when quarantined with a kid.
Why, you ask? For one thing, they’re cute little toys — that happen to usually come in packs of more-than-one. And I don’t know about your kids, but there are few things my kid enjoys more than making multiple tiny creatures/fairies/what have you talk to each other in squeaky voices and fly all over the house together. That’s the Hatchimals win #1.
But the bigger win, perhaps, is that half the fun of Hatchimals is — you guessed it — the hatching. These critters come in eggs, hearts, and more that kids get to crack open with gusto to reveal the toy surprise. It’s like some sort of very adorable, sparkle-filled version of Jurassic Park up in my living room all day as my kid births these creatures into the world, names them, and creates whole universes populated by them. So yes, basically it’s all very weird and wonderful at the same time. Just like, you know, most of quarantine with kids.
Up ahead, check out all the Hatchimals fan favorites and soon-to-be new launches, from collEGGtible (get it?!) pets to flying (literally — gasps guaranteed) fairies.

Hatchimals CollEGGtibles, Limmy Edish Exclusive Glamfetti
If this tongue-twisting title doesn’t say it all, we don’t know that a caption could do this toy justice. Limited edition confetti-filled collectible, hatch-able critters in crunchy, smashable eggs are pretty much a kiddo’s dream.
Hatchimals Colleggtibles, Mermal Magic 6 Pack Shell Carrying Case with Season 5 Colleggtibles
This underwater wonder is the only way to add Sapphire Springs (yes, that’s a place now) Hatchimals to your kid’s collection. Just dip in water to change the colors and make kids of all ages go “oooooh!” Plus, it’s not even expensive.
Hatchimals Pixies Vacay Style
Possibly my personal favorite and definitely the most hilarious of Hatchimals ideas, this set of pixie gals comes with everything they need for their (highly Instagrammable, natch) vacations to cities like New York, Miami, and my dear Nashville. And yes, “everything they need” includes glitter luggage and a selfie stick. What did you expect?
Hatchimals CollEGGtibles 4-Pack + Bonus
This set comes with four in-egg Hatchimals plus a bonus one just chillin’ outside his egg. The trick with these? “Place them on a light, they shine bright!” instructs the Hatchimals site. Because you know glowing critters is going to make bedtime that much more fun.
Hatchimals Mystery
For the true risk-taking toy-hatchers among us, the Hatchimals Mystery is here to give you…absolutely no idea what you’re getting. All you know is it’s a furry creature, and it has a bizarre name (apparently the choices are Bunwee, Pandor, Hedgehog, or Elefly?). THE SUSPENSION IS KILLING US.
Hatchimals Surprise – Giraven
These twin Hatchimals tell each other jokes and say “I love you.” You know, just like real twins do for each other (when parents are lucky).
Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Collector’s Case with 2 Exclusive Hatchimals
The Hatchimals Collector’s Case lets kids carry their “pets” with them on the go. Once they can leave the house again, that is.
Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Spring Bouquet
This is no ordinary bouquet of roses. Each bloom hatches a new pet — because animals hatching out of flowers is totally normal Hatchimals world stuff, obv.
Hatchimals Pixies Crystal Flyers
These fairies really do fly. I have to be honest: I’m not sure who was more floored by watching them in action, me or my kid. They have IR Sensors in their feet that even let you — er, your kid I mean — guide their flight like a spinning fairy hoverboard.
Available August 2020, $29.99
Hatchimals Pixies Riders
You’ve seen pixies going on vacation, pixies flying, and now of course you’ve got pixies on ponies. Because what would a pink, glitter-covered toy be without a pony variation? These Pixie Riders also ride various dinos/unicorns/what-have-you magical creatures of all sorts. As you’d expect!
Available August 2020, $14.99
Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Cosmic Candy
These eggs have hearts you peel off to reveal a mystery clue — before hatching the heart itself, which reassembles into a “cosmic candy” backdrop. Cute candy-themed creatures are, naturally, what’s hiding inside.
