We have no idea how old the color pink is, but Pink, one of our favorite singers and celebrity moms of all time, is turning 41 on September 8. And while she’s always been an outspoken woman, we are delighted that she appears to be getting more candid with age — especially when it comes to talking about being a mother to 9-year-old daughter Willow and 3-year-old son Jameson.
Back in 2019, Pink announced to Entertainment Tonight that she was going to be taking 2020 off from music in order to spend more time with her family. Little did she know how much time with her family she would wind up spending this year. Like the rest of us, Pink faced some parenting challenges during quarantine, but as we’ve seen from her over the years, challenges are kind of her forte. That’s a good thing, considering the scare she and husband Carey Hart had when both Pink and Jameson became infected with COVID-19 in April.
“This is the scariest thing I’ve ever, ever been through in my whole life,” Pink told Ellen DeGeneres, describing what it was like when her youngest had chest pains and a fever that wouldn’t go away.
After her ordeal, she donated $1 million to coronavirus relief funds, because that’s what mothers do; they try to fix things however they can.
Since then, Pink has gone back to her more irreverent tone, clapping back at social media “parenting experts” and raising her kids exactly as she sees fit. We continue to be in awe of the confidence with which she does so. Along the way, she has shown us how to boost our kids’ self-esteem, find joy in their chaos, and even see how their quirks reflect upon our own childhoods.
We love that Pink doesn’t make motherhood look easy, but still conveys how much she loves it.
“It’s so hard. Y’all. I wish us mamas could give ourselves and each other a break,” she tweeted once.
We do too.
Here are more of Pink’s very real, and so effing perfect quotes about motherhood and her kids.
On Homeschool
“Trying out this preschool thing remotely,” she captioned a photo of Jameson on the computer in September. “My heart breaks for these kids, and my heart also goes out to every parent and teacher right now trying to figure it all out. I’m grateful for community and for all of us trying to keep each other safe. In the words of my father, ‘this, too, shall pass.'”
On Being the Family Photographer
“Happy Mother’s Day to all the picture takers of the family that can find 5,000 photos of their families and none of them,” she wrote on Instagram in 2020.
On Quarantine Moods
“We’ve lost it. But we’re together! AT HOME,” Pink said on Instagram in March, sharing a wild video of Willow shaving her dad’s hair off.
On Jameson Suffering With COVID-19
“At one point when he started throwing up and saying he had chest pains and it hurt to breathe, that’s the point where you’re just kind of like, ‘OK, are we going to the hospital? What are we doing right now?’ Because this is the scariest thing I’ve ever, ever been through in my whole life,” Pink told Ellen DeGeneres. While she admitted to feeling bad about the fact that she could get a coronavirus test when they were so limited in April, she defended herself, saying, “[T]ell me anybody with a sick 3-year-old that if they could get their hands on a test wouldn’t take it and if they say that, I’m calling bullshit.”
On Aging as a Mom
“Every once in a while, you consider altering your face, and then you watch a show where you want to see what the person is feeling… and their face doesn’t move,” Pink wrote on Twitter in January. “I cannot get behind it. I just can’t. I want my children to know what I look like when I’m angry.”
On Having 2
“You and Willow have been bickering all morning, and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Pink wrote on Jameson’s birthday in 2019. “You bring so much light to the world, my boy. Thank you. Happy birthday 🎂.”
Planning a ‘Family’ Year
“We did two and a half years of [music], and Willow’s back in school now,” she told ET. “Jameson’s going to start pre-school soon. It’s kind of the year of the family. And Carey has a lot going on as well. He’s super supportive, he follows me around the world and now it’s his turn.”
On Not Taking Kids’ Behavior Personally
“I look at Willow and she’s so naughty and fiery, and I’m not going to take any of her fierceness personally,” she told Redbook. “My mom took all of my behavior personally. Everything I did, she thought it was an act of rebellion against her. But it was just me being me. And that’s something I want to post on every mirror in my house: This is not about you!”
On Writing Music With Mom Brain
“I told everyone, ‘I don’t know if I have anything to say, because I’m in a fog right now of: Have I breast-fed my child enough? And is my husband still in love with me? Should we have sex? What kind of sex? My boobs hurt. Should I be on birth control?'” she told Redbook of the album she wrote when Willow was less than a year old.
On Her Emergency C-Section
“We were going to do a home birth, no drugs — deep down, I’m a California crystal hippie lady,” Pink told Redbook of her birth plan. “But after laboring at home for two days, I wound up with an emergency C-section! She was frank breech, which means she was like this [brings her knees up to her chest with her feet pointing to the ceiling]. I did everything to turn that baby around. I thought I was pretty tough. But when this harsh contraction hit, I was like, ‘You have got to be kidding me!’ I felt like I was being scooped out like a pumpkin and hit by a train — all at the same time. I looked at Carey and was like, ‘Will you still respect me if I throw in the towel?’ She was nine pounds.”
On Her Most Precious Possession
“The most important jewels that will ever be wrapped around your neck are the arms of your children. Good job Mamas,” she tweeted.
On Free-Range (Indoor) Parenting
“Yeah my kid rides her bike inside,” Pink captioned an Instagram pic. “Without clothes. And helmets. While I ignore her and look at my phone.”
Supporting Other Moms
“A really sweet Mama came up 2me tonight at the grocery store and told me some nice words about how she gets strength from my parenting cause I’m not afraid to fuck up in public,” Pink tweeted. “We cried together. It’s so hard. Y’all. I wish us mamas could give ourselves and each other a break.”
On Gender-Neutral Parenting
“We are a very label-less household,” she told the Mirror. “Last week Willow told me she is going to marry an African woman. I was like: ‘Great, can you teach me how to make African food?’”
On the Shock of Being a Responsible Parent
“I’m much more mom than I am anything else. Absolutely 100%,” she told the Mirror. “They are my everything. It’s the two best decisions I ever made. Every decision I make is a choice because it affects my family. I do bake sales and lemonade stands. I take my kid to school and try to get there on time. I’m a f***ing grown up now, it’s so weird. I’m still a 12-year-old boy.”
On Looking ‘Like a Boy’
“I was driving my daughter to school and she said to me, out of the blue … ‘I’m the ugliest girl I know,'” Pink relayed onstage at the VMAs in 2017. “And I said, ‘Huh?’ And she said, ‘Yeah, I look like a boy with long hair.’ … I didn’t say anything, and instead I went home and I made a PowerPoint presentation for her. And in that presentation were androgynous rock stars and artists that live their truth, are probably made fun of every day of their life, and carry on and wave their flag and inspire the rest of us …So, baby girl. We don’t change. We take the gravel in the shell and we make a pearl. And we help other people change so they can see more kinds of beauty.”
On the Struggle to Let Our Children Learn
“I see my 6-year-old and I’m like, ‘I just want to give you the sh-t that I already know,” she said at an event. “But you can’t borrow somebody else’s knowledge, you have to buy your own. I know that too. It sucks when you’re a mom. I don’t want my kids to buy their own knowledge, I just want them to swallow mine.”
On Her Daughter’s Dating Life
“She said to me the other day, ‘How many boys can I have at once?'” Pink recounted to Cosmopolitan. “And I said, ‘Excuse me?’ … I said, ‘Probably none of them because they won’t deserve you.’ … They have to be kind, respectful, they have to be chivalrous, they have to be good to their moms, they have to be good looking, they have to be funny.”
Clapping Back at Unsolicited Advice
“Chocolate is good for babies right?” Pink captioned a photo of Jameson. “Help me Instagram, we can’t possibly parent without you.”
On Her Daughter’s Name
“It is the most flexible tree and nothing can break it — no wind, no elements. It can bend and withstand anything. I love that sentiment and I want that for her,” she told Hello! magazine. “Sage is cleansing and sacred and it sounds great with Willow. It doesn’t hurt that her last name is Hart — flexible, cleansed heart.”
