A winter pregnancy presents a special sartorial dilemma for moms: Do you buy a new maternity coat, a regular coat in a larger size, or just stick with your old coat and wear it open? While sometimes you can count on that extra blood flow to keep you warm enough to forgo the coat altogether, you probably want to have one just in case. And just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you don’t want to look good all winter.
There are advantages to buying a “maternity” coat: It will be cut to fit your bump, rather than just fitting you like a giant tent. And hopefully, if it’s made with pregnant women in mind, it won’t be too challenging to open and close in those last few weeks. We also love the coats that can be used to surround your baby in a baby carrier once you’ve welcomed them into the chilly outside world. There are even three-in-one options that increase the value of your investment by converting into a “regular” coat once the baby’s out and you’re not carrying them around.
But maybe you’d rather not spend all that extra money on maternity clothes, since after all, this is something you will wear for only one winter (or however many winters you plan on having babies!). You are in luck at the moment. While you’re going to have trouble donning those slim-fitting classic coats that Nicole Kidman wore in The Undoing, you can still be very au courant in your outerwear. Oversize coats are still very in at the moment, and you can see trendy waifish model-types walking around in puffers and overcoats that would easily fit your pregnant body too — albeit a little differently. This means you can drop a little extra cash on a gorgeous, stylish coat now, and then keep wearing it in the seasons to come.
Last but not least, if you really love your current collection of coats and can’t bear to replace them even for a season, there are coat adaptors that will help you close those guys over your rising belly. Simply clip them into the sides and you can zip your old fave up like new.
Speaking of zippers, before and after you buy your coat, be sure to evaluate how well you’ll be able to zip, snap, button, and tie it when you’re ready to pop and/or when you’ve got a little one tucked inside. We love a good stylish coat, but practicality counts here too.
