From wild wrestling matches one minute to sweet cuddles the next, having sons is sure to keep you on your toes. I have three boys, and I love their energetic, chaotic, creative, smart, and funny energy. And while I would love to have a daughter one day, I’m also a proud #BoyMom — just like many celebrities.
Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Megan Fox and other famous mamas love being parents to all boys and have spoken up about the unique challenges of raising sons. From the funny things you have to remind your boys about to breaking gender stereotypes, these moms have given inspirational advice on teaching sons to be respectful, show kindness to others and embrace their emotional side.
For example, Stefani has said she would be “proud to have a gay son” because she just wants her kids (Kingston, Zuma, and Apollo) “to be happy.” Spears has gushed about her special mother-son bond on Instagram on numerous occasions, referencing her relationship with sons Sean, and Jayden. And Fox, mom of Noah, Bodhi, and Journey, has talked about teaching her sons confidence and expressing themselves. It’s just so encouraging to see!
Families come in all kinds, from single parents who adopt to super involved girl dads to exes who are committed coparents and so much more. But there is something incredibly special about moms and sons, and we love seeing celebrities embrace the relationship! Check out these proud #BoyMoms below.
Meghan Trainor
As parents to sons Riley (b. 2021) and Barry (b. 2023), Meghan Trainor and husband Daryl Sabara are crushing it. The “Mother” singer told SheKnows earlier this year, “Every parent should do this. Me and Daryl will high five and be like, ‘We’re good at this!’ Like when our kid is so happy, so kind, so sweet, we’re like, ‘Yo — we make good babies! Oh, we made a star.’ So that’s why we’re confident in making more. We’re like, we’ve kept him alive for two years, we can do this.”
Not to mention, she is already ready for more kids. “The first thing I said when I saw Riley in the NICU wrapped up in all the tubes and wires, I was like, ‘Beautiful! We need three more,’” she told us. “Yeah, I just want more and more and more.”
Garcelle Beauvais
Garcelle Beauvais is a proud boy mom times three! She shares son Oliver Saunders (b. 1991) with ex-husband Daniel Saunders, as well as twins Jax Joseph Nilon and Jaid Thomas Nilon (b. 2007), with ex-husband Michael Nilon.
In a blog post for PEOPLE in 2012, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star wrote, “As much as I love what I have accomplished so far as an actress, I have to say that being a mom — with all of its challenges and rewards — has been the best role of my life.”
She added, “I always wanted to have kids, and when I dreamed about my future, I pictured having a boy first and then a girl — the perfect nuclear family. Well, we can’t always have it our way. But I have to say, I got really lucky!”
Pamela Anderson
Pamela Anderson shares two sons with ex Tommy Lee: Brandon Thomas (b. 1996) and Dylan Jagger (b. 1997). The Baywatch star opened up about her boys in her memoir, Love, Pamela.
“Brandon and Dylan are true miracles, considering their gene pool,” she wrote, per PEOPLE. “They have been through so much, yet they are not full of holes.”
Her sons adore their mom. Brandon told PEOPLE in Feb. 2023, “I’ve known her my whole life, but when I think of my mom, I think of an incredibly well-read, intelligent, well-spoken, kind-hearted, passionate person, and I just think the world has never really seen her like that.” So sweet!
Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway has a super private life with her two sons, Jonathan Rosebanks (b. 2016) and Jack (b. 2019), who she shares with husband Adam Schulman. In an appearance on The Jess Cagle Showpodcast in Oct. 2022, the Princess Diaries alum shared that her kids influence her career choices.
“I have to say, the ‘kids’ thing has been the biggest shift,” she said. “That’s kind of prioritized everything, so it’s actually made me a bit choosier, because something really has to be so excellent to spend time away from them because they’re so precious to me; they’re the most scared part of my life by a longshot.”
She added, “And then when I do accept something, it puts greater pressure on me to make it worth the time that I’ve spent away from them.”
Zoe Saldana
Zoe Saldana said she has “a wonderful time” as a boy mom to twins Cy and Bowie (b. 2014 ) and Zen (b. 2016) — even if she was trying for a girl.
“The third one was supposed to be [a daughter] and then [my husband Marc Perego] just doesn’t give any girls,” Saldana joked. “I would have been great as a mother of daughters, but the universe, in its irony, and how I became a mom of three boys in the post-#MeToo movement [means] I’m accepting the challenge.”
“I get to witness and really nurture a young boy before he turns into a man,” the actress said, “and I think that that’s the task for us mothers, as well.”
Celine Dion
Celine Dion is a boy mom of three! Dion shares René-Charles (b. 2001) and twins Nelson and Eddy (b. 2010) with her late husband René Angélil.
And while the world may see her as a musical icon, she told People in 2007 that she wasn’t “really a singer,” but that her “life is to be a mom.”
“It is what I enjoy the most. It is my most amazing reward,” she said. “I will take a chance with my music. I don’t take risks with my family.”
And while the boy is surrounded by men, she didn’t want her oldest to be burdened by the stereotypical “man of the house” trope after Angélil passed away.
“I said to him, ‘I never want you to feel the pressure of being the man of the house, you have your own dreams and he is always with you in your heart and I am here for you.'”
Gwen Stefani
Three boys — Kingston (b. 2006), Zuma (b. 2008), and Apollo, (b. 2014) — definitely keep mom Gwen Stefani busy. In 2017, she opened up to People about the importance of setting boundaries with them. “I was in a band and free my whole life, so I always thought I would be really free with [my kids] and do whatever I wanted, like, ‘Oh, I’ll take them out of school.’ But you learn that when they have boundaries is when they feel the safest.”
She also told PrideSource in 2016 that she would be “blessed with a gay son.”
“I would be blessed with a gay son,” she said. “You know that I would feel blessed about that. I just want my boys to be happy and healthy, and I just ask God to guide me every day to be a good mother because it is not an easy job…I just want my kids to be happy, and whatever journey God gives them is their journey. I just need to be there to be the most supportive mom that I can be, and that’s what I’m gonna be.”
Britney Spears
Britney Spears is mom to son Sean (b. 2005) and Jayden (b. 2006) with ex Kevin Federline. And although she has joked about having another baby, she has also opened up about being a boy mom.
In a 2017 interview with People, Spears said, “My kids come first, always. There is nothing more rewarding than being a mom and watching my sons grow into young men.”
In September 2021, she posted a quote to Instagram that read, “There is nothing stronger than the love between a mother and son.” She captioned it, “I truly believe this quote which is why I wanted to share it…there’s a lot I can’t share with you all because my kids are very private which I love but I will tell you they are both extremely talented and I’m so incredibly blessed to have these two little men in my life!!! And if they’re reading this…which I’m pretty sure they’re not…I love you two little devils so much!!!”
A few months earlier, in March 2021, she posted, “It’s so crazy how time flies….My boys are so big now!!!! I know…I know…it’s very hard for any mama especially a mama with boys seeing them grow up so fast!!!! Talk about enough to make you go to your knees … GEEZ!!!! I’m extremely lucky because my two babies are such gentleman and so kind that I must have done something right.”
Julie Bowen
In a 2016 interview with Us Weekly, Julie Bowen opened up about the challenges of raising three boys, saying, “You need those friends you can tell, ‘Oh, my lord, I have three jackasses for children!”
The Modern Family actress has sons Oliver (b. 2007) and twins John and Gustav (b. 2009) with ex-husband Scott Phillips. In the interview, she added that her boys are “rambunctious.”
“We’ve had four or five casts in three years. There was a point when I thought the Department of Children and Family Services was going to show up at my door! … There’s a lot of naked wrestling. How many times can you say, ‘No yanking on one another’s genitals?’ Everything is hilarious until someone starts crying.”
She also joked that Reese Witherspoon helped her with parenting. “I read some article where Reese Witherspoon said, ‘If you’re not yelling at your kids, you’re not spending enough time with them.’ It made me feel so much better. I was like, ‘Oh, this must mean I’m a good mom!’ Reese Witherspoon, who I’ve only met once, saved my life with one quote.” We can definitely relate!
Melissa Joan Hart
Melissa Joan Hart shares three boys with husband Mark Wilkerson: Mason (b. 2006), Braydon (b. 2008), and Tucker (b. 2013). In a 2013 interview with ABC News, when the actress was thinking about if she wanted more kids or not, she admitted that girls intimidated her.
“I’m scared of girls,” she said. “If we had a girl it would almost be like an only child in a sense because she’d be so left out! We’d have to redo our whole house… new toys and new bikes. There are so many hand-me-downs in the family! It’s awesome.”
She also added that she used to argue with her Melissa & Joey costar over whether it’s harder to raise boys or girls. “He has all girls, and we argue over who has it rougher. I’m so thankful I don’t have girls! He’s like, ‘Well, I dealt with a temper tantrum,’ and I’m like, ‘I dealt with one punching the other and a fat lip!’ I’ve got the testosterone, but he’s got all the crying.” It’s safe to say they are both hard, just in different ways!
Carrie Underwood
In between the birth of her son Isaiah (b. 2015) and Jacob (b. 2019) with husband Mike Fisher, Carrie Underwood had three miscarriages. This made her appreciate her two sons even more! In an interview with Taste of Country in 2018, she said about her second pregnancy, “We were just so excited. It took us a while to get here, and we were just feeling so blessed. And then to find out Isaiah is going to have a baby brother, it was just great news.”
She also opened up about how she hopes to set a good example for her kids. “I’m honored to get to hold some pretty incredible titles, and mom is definitely one of them,” Underwood added. “I’m excited that they get to see their mom do that and see me on stage. Hopefully I can be an inspiration to my children and to other working moms out there, because we got this.”
Alicia Keys
Alicia Keys shares sons Egypt (b. 2010), and Genesis (b. 2014) with husband Swizz Beatz, and she absolutely loves spending time with them. In October 2021, she told People (The TV Show!), “I love being right square in the middle. Nobody else should be doing it aside from their dad and me. This is our job, and we love it. I have to be there.”
She has previously opened up about encouraging her sons to express their feminine side and ignore gender stereotypes. In an Instagram post in November 2019, she wrote, “I oftentimes express the masculine energy that’s inside of me. All the time, if that happens, there’s the judgments, and there’s the stereotypes, and there’s all the energy that comes toward that. And for my boys, you know, similar. If they want to express the feminine energy that’s inside of them, there’s all these judgments and all these rules and stereotypes and vibes. It’s really frustrating to me. I’m actually really, really frustrated about it.”
Earlier, in February 2019, she posted a video of herself singing, with the caption, “I feel so blessed to raise MY boys. I love how different they are from each other and how much they teach me.”
Lauren Conrad
When Lauren Conrad first got pregnant in 2017, she said she was “thrilled to be having a boy.” In an interview with Fit Pregnancy and Baby in 2017, she said, “I really wanted a boy. My husband [musician William Tell] kept saying, ‘We just want a healthy baby.’ And I’d say, ‘But a boy would be nice!’ I was a wild little tomboy, so I think I understand boys. My mom always told me that nobody loves you like a son does, especially when he’s young.”
Conrad and her husband have two sons, Liam (b. 2017) and Charlie (b. 2019).
Jessica Biel
Jessica Biel’s sons, Phineas (b. 2015) and Silas (b. 2020), whom she shares with husband Justin Timberlake, love each other, making Biel’s job as a mom much easier! In April 2021, she talked about their unique relationship on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, saying the two, “both think the other one is hilarious.”
“Silas, he is the performer, he wants to make the jokes and he wants the whole attention on him, so Phin only has eyes for him,” she said. “Everything Silas does is hilarious and anything Phin does is hilarious, so they just laugh at each other all day long. It’s so cute.”
She also talked about how hard it is having two. “A very wise friend of mine said, ‘One is a lot, and two is a thousand.’ And I said, ‘Oh my god, you’re right.’ That’s exactly how it feels. You’re just man-on-man defense, one person’s over here and the other person’s over here.”
Despite the challenges, Biel seems to be thriving as a mom to these wonderful boys! In September 2021, she told Today, “The baby thinks that Silas has hung the moon. So, that’s really cute. He, of course, wants to do everything that his older brother’s doing and follows him around everywhere. But Silas is the best big brother. He’s so sweet, and he’s just a lovely guy. We’re pretty lucky. They’re sweet boys.”
Megan Fox
Teaching her sons to ignore gender stereotypes is all part of being a boy mom to Megan Fox. The actress shares sons Noah (b. 2012), Bodhi (b. 2014), and Journey (b. 2016), with ex Brian Austin Green. In a 2019 interview with “The Talk,” she opened up about her oldest son’s love of fashion, when he was then 6.
“Sometimes he’ll dress himself and he likes to wear dresses, sometimes — and I send him to a really liberal, like hippy school. But even there, here in California, he still has little boys going like, ‘Boys don’t wear dresses,’ or ‘Boys don’t wear pink.’ We’re going through that now, where I’m trying to teach him to be confident, no matter what anyone else says.”
We love seeing this mama stick up for her sons!
Amy Poehler
Amy Poehler’s two sons, Archie (b. 2008) and Abel, (b. 2010) with ex Will Arnett, keep her on her toes! In 2017, she told People, “I have two young boys who are very active, so I’ve probably had to jump or climb something I didn’t want to. Physically, I probably put some pep in my step in ways where I would rather nap.”
But no matter what, she loves her boys. In her Yes, Please memoir in 2014, she talked about a special tradition she loved doing with her kids: star-gazing during the full moon. “I watch their little fat feet and their shiny cheeks as they jump into the backseat of the car. These boys, they are delicious. I swear, if I could eat my children, I would. I love my boys so much I fear my heart will explode. I wonder if this love will crack open my chest and split me in half. It is scary, this love.”
