Hollywood’s most legendary bachelor George Clooney got married to esteemed human rights barrister Amal Clooney in 2014 and, three years later, the couple welcomed an adorable set of twins. Clooney hasn’t opened up a whole lot about being father to 4-year-old Alexander and Ella but the sweet nuggets he has shared shows just how much the role has changed him.
In celebration of the actor’s 61st birthday, we’re taking a look back at all the things Clooney has said about being a dad — from the admiration he has for Amal’s mothering skills to learning to diaper like an absolute pro.
Fatherhood = joyfulness personified
There’s one big way that fatherhood has changed Clooney — and it’s a pretty important one.
“They’re funny, and they pull pranks on me,” Clooney said on WTF with Marc Maron, while discussing his twins. “I just look at them thinking, I couldn’t be happier and I couldn’t be more surprised at how happy I am.”
Learning to shape a whole new generation
Having children has taught Clooney that he gets to play a key role in raising two good, self-aware, kind human beings.
“I have always felt a great sense of responsibility to other people in the world, but when you have children of your own, you realize you are responsible for their lives in a way you haven’t been before,” he toldDaily Mail. “And you become conscious that you want to make an example of your own life that they will follow.”
The actor added that, along the way, he’s going to make sure his kids understand their massive privilege.
“It’s challenging to remind children who have been born into this glass of celebrity and money to have empathy for people who aren’t as fortunate as they are,” he explained. “That’s going to be Amal’s and my job to teach our children, and it’s an important one.”
There’s so much crying. But in a good way.
Clooney’s bachelor days are far from over. Now his life is filled with tears, diapers and more diapers…and you know what? He doesn’t seem to mind at all.
“Now my house is filled with the warm sounds of babies crying. You should see when my friends show up and see me change a diaper, the laughter that comes from them,” he joked during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I go, ‘I know, I know.’ I’ve given them so much sh*t for so many years, I deserve every bit of it.”
One of the biggest criers? Clooney himself. “I cry more than they do,” he revealed to The Daily Mail. “I cry four times a day right now, because I’m so tired.”
A newfound admiration for Amal
Clooney always had such glowing things to say about Amal, but seeing her in action as a mom has added a whole new level of appreciation.
“I have such admiration for my wife because she’s breastfeeding them and getting about two hours of sleep per interval, and the love they have for her is a sight to see and it’s beautiful,” he toldThe Daily Mail.
Enjoying the ride — even when it’s not what you expected
Clooney really didn’t expect to have kids at his age but it’s taught him a very zen new approach to life.
“Right now my job is changing diapers and walking them around a little bit,” Clooney quipped to the Associated Press. “I really didn’t think at 56 that I would be the parent of twins. Don’t make plans. You always have to just enjoy the ride.”
Feeling all the new feelings
There are lots of wonderful new emotions that come along with being a parent — and Clooney is experiencing so many of them.
“[Fatherhood] has made me much older. It doesn’t fundamentally change you, but I’m excited to see who these two people are going to be in life. I’m very proud to be [a dad]. I feel honored to be a part of it,” he toldEntertainment Tonight.
