You won’t see Gavin Rossdale using the term “co-parent” when it comes to parenting with ex-wife Gwen Stefani. The Bush frontman recently dished on the duo’s parenting styles with their three boys, and it’s an interesting perspective.
“I think you can go one of two ways — you can either do everything together and really co-parent, and see how that goes — or you can just parent. And I think we just parent,” Rossdale said on today’s episode of Not So Hollywoodpodcast, per PEOPLE.

Rossdale and Stefani don’t necessarily come to decisions together — or even come to an agreement about things to teach their kids.

He clarified, “We’re really different people … I don’t think there’s much similarity in the way we bring them up, but I think that gives them an incredible perspective to then choose which pieces of those two lives they’d like to inherit and move on with and which part of themselves come out of the whole process.”
Gavin Rossdale Says He and Gwen Stefani Have ‘Opposing Views’
Rossdale said some things he and Stefani are teaching their boys are “opposing.”
“What’s important is to give them a wide view of things, and we definitely have some particularly opposing views so I think it’d be really helpful for them to make their own minds as individuals.”
He doesn’t go into what exactly these opposing views are, but if it’s a politics or human rights issue, that could make it much harder to co-parent than, say, a disagreement on whether pineapple belongs on pizza (which it does).
Rossdale has spoken out about women’s rights before, including calling the overturning of Roe vs. Wade “medieval.”
“To me, it’s an obvious thing. It seems [like] a medieval step in the wrong direction and it doesn’t make sense — to me,” the British rocker said, via Blabbermouth. “And so I just put it in a song. And it just sparks conversation. And my job as a lyricist is to just kind of capture the time, to capture the zeitgeist or the feeling or the emotion. That’s what [my] songs are, from the beginning to now. They’re sort of commentaries on what’s going on around me that other people relate to.”
And when Paper Magazine asked Stefani if she was a Republican in May 2021, she answered, “I can see how people would be curious, but I think it’s pretty obvious who I am.”
“I’ve been around forever,” she added. ” I started my band because we were really influenced by ska, which was a movement that happened in the late ’70s, and it was really all about people coming together. The first song I ever wrote was a song called ‘Different People,’ which was on the Obama playlist, you know, a song about everyone being different and being the same and loving each other. The very first song I wrote.”
So maybe their “opposing views” have less to do with the big things and more to do with smaller disagreements.

Stefani and Rossdale are parents to sons Kingston, 17, Zuma, 14, and Apollo, 9. (Rossdale is also dad to Daisy Lowe, with Pearl Lowe, who welcomed her first child, Ivy, earlier this year.)
The two were married from 2002-2016. The “Sweet Escape” singer married Blake Shelton in 2021.
Blake Shelton Takes Stepparenting Seriously
In a Dec. 2022 interview with PEOPLE, Shelton opened up about being a stepparent.
“Even though I’m a stepparent, I take that job very seriously,” he said. “The kids see me as a very important person in their life.”
“[When they ask], ‘Why isn’t Blake here?’ I take that stuff to heart. I’ve made plenty of money, but you can’t buy time back,” he said. “I don’t want any regrets.”
