Growing up royal comes with a certain amount of privilege. The Wales kids may be too little to understand exactly what it means to be a prince or princess, but they are old enough to see how lucky they are. Prince William had a crowning example of selflessness from his mom, Princess Diana, and he seems to be carrying on her legacy with his and Kate Middleton’s children, Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 5. He opened up about the very important topic he often discusses with his three children, and it’s a great reminder to start the conversation with our own kids!
Prince William Talks About Homelessness on the School Run
In an interview with The Sunday Times, the Prince of Wales revealed that he wanted to teach his three children about homelessness like his mother taught him.
“On the school run, we talk about what we see,” William told the outlet, per Mirror. “When we were in London, driving backwards and forwards, we regularly used to see people sitting outside supermarkets, and we’d talk about it. I’d say to the children, ‘Why are they there? What’s going on?’”
He went on to explain that it doesn’t help children to shield these issues from them. “I think it’s in all our interests, it’s the right thing to do, to expose the children, at the right stage, in the right dialogue, so they have an understanding,” he continued. “They [will] grow up knowing that actually, do you know what, some of us are very fortunate, some of us need a little bit of a helping hand, some of us need to do a bit more where we can to help others improve their lives.”
It’s never too early to talk to your kids about their privilege! Sure, they may not be actual royalty like the Wales children, but all kids can learn to recognize the opportunities they were been born with and use those to help others.
Prince William Says He Will Give Food to Those Experiencing Homelessness
But Prince William doesn’t just talk about those experiencing homelessness. He actually models helping them, too.
“I don’t tend to give money. I tend to buy them a drink, food, something like that,” he told The Sunday Times, per Daily Mail. “I find that when I’m walking around or driving past and see other people do it [give money], people don’t even look at them. How many people stop and talk to somebody who is homeless? Very few of us.”
Prince William continued, “In my job, I get to meet these people, I get to hear the stories, I get to feel it, I get to see it. That for me — and I’ve heard from them themselves — matters an awful lot. They’ve become invisible. It’s really important that society acknowledges that there is somebody there and they’re having a tough time. It shouldn’t happen but it’s right there. You can’t ignore it.”
He also teased “a really big project” coming from the Royal Foundation, which he heads with the Princess of Wales. And soon, he plans to take his own kids to a homeless shelter, just like Princess Diana did with him and Prince Harry. It’s just one more way he’s carrying on her legacy.
Prince William Celebrated Father’s Day with a New Photo
Prince William celebrated Father’s Day by sharing a new photo of him and his three kids. In it, the Prince of Wales sits on a bench, with Princess Charlotte and Prince George on either side of him. Prince Louis is behind his dad, with his arms wrapped around his neck and a big smile on his face. All four are wearing blue in this heart-warming family photo. What a joyful family moment!
