Class is in session for Kate Middleton and Prince William! They visited schoolchildren at the Madley Primary School’s Forest School in Hereford, England, on Sept. 14, and learned a thing or two from the students that they want to pass on to their own kids, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5.
Toasting Apples
During the visit, children were toasting apples covered in cinnamon and sugar on a campfire. It sounds like the perfect fall treat to us, and Middleton thought so too.
“It’s like a healthy marshmallow,” Princess Kate told the kids, per Hello. “It always tastes so much better whenever you cook something on the fire. I’ve seen 1,000 marshmallows around the fire, but I’ve never seen a sugar-dipped apple.”
“I’m going to try this with my kids,” she added. Prince William agreed, commenting, “It smells delicious.”
Kids love holding a skewer of food over a campfire, so this is a great way to let them indulge that outdoor fun in a healthier way. We love it!
Making a Fire
The schoolchildren at the Forest School didn’t just know how to make the apples — they also learn how to start and maintain the fire! “These are really good skills to learn, to be able to keep warm, to feed yourselves,” Middleton commented, per Hello, adding, “Is it nice learning here? It’s so peaceful, isn’t it? I could stay here all afternoon.”
It’ll be interesting to see if her own kids learn how to start a fire now that the idea has been lit in Princess Kate’s mind.
Taking Care of the Environment
Another thing the kids have in common with the royal children? Litter-picking! Middleton revealed, “We do a lot of that at home.”
In fact, Prince William makes it a point to talk to his kids about privilege. “On the school run, we talk about what we see,” William told The Sunday Times in June. “When we were in London, driving backwards and forwards, we regularly used to see people sitting outside supermarkets, and we’d talk about it. I’d say to the children, ‘Why are they there? What’s going on?’”
He added, “I think it’s in all our interests, it’s the right thing to do, to expose the children, at the right stage, in the right dialogue, so they have an understanding. They [will] grow up knowing that actually, do you know what, some of us are very fortunate, some of us need a little bit of a helping hand, some of us need to do a bit more where we can to help others improve their lives.”
Books for the Kids
During the visit to the Forest School, the schoolkids presented the royals with three books for their kids: The Last Tree by Luke Adam Hawker, The Circles All Around Us by Brad Montague, and Kindness Grows by Britta Teckentrup.
“Thank you, they love reading,” Middleton said, per Hello. “Actually, it’s a great way to start learning about the environment.”
The Big Help Out
In May, the Prince and Princess of Wales took all three kids to the Big Help Out, where they helped volunteers renovate a building. They got to ride in an excavator, stain wood, try archery, and more. At the end, they even got to toast marshmallows!
We bet Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis will love trying the cinnamon sugar apples over the fire — and we can’t wait to try it with our kids too.
