In a dangerous time full of transgender hate and anti-LGBTQIA+ bills, Busy Philipps’ response to her daughter Birdie’s gender identity update is a breath of fresh air. The Freaks and Geeks alum gave an update about her 15-year-old, and the “incredible” thing about it that is so heartwarming.
Birdie’s Pronouns
“The truth is Birdie has decided that her pronouns are she/her,” the Mean Girls musical movie star told Page Six at the 2023 American Museum of Natural History Gala on Nov. 30. Previously, the teen used “they/them” pronouns.
Birdie’s decision to go back to she/her is all part of figuring out who she is. Philips said this decision is “what’s so incredible about what gender-affirming care can be. That you allow kids to figure out who they are.”
What an absolutely beautiful response! Philips seems to be supportive and loving no matter what her daughter decides to do, and she is completely understanding that Birdie changed her mind. She may change her mind again (she’s 15!!), and now she knows that’s totally OK because of how supportive her mom is being. It’s truly an inspiration for all parents of LGBTQIA+ children.
Busy Philips Revealed Birdie Is Gay in Dec. 2021
Two years ago, Philips announced on her podcast, Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best, that Birdie is gay and preferred they/them pronouns. “Birdie said that they would like their pronouns to be they/them, and I haven’t been doing it,” the actress said. “I have this public persona and I want Birdie to be in control of their own narrative and not have to answer to anybody outside of our friends and family if they don’t want to. Bird was like, ‘I don’t give a f–k. You can talk about how I’m gay and out. You can talk about my pronouns. That would be cool with me. That’s great.’ So I said, ‘OK, I can talk about it on the podcast.’”
Philips also recalled a conversation she had with Birdie at the time, where she told her, “This is living, you can’t wait for it to start. … You get to build your life however the f–k you want to, and it doesn’t have to look like anything you’ve ever seen or anything that’s ever been modeled for you because maybe it doesn’t exist. You get to choose what will make you feel fulfilled and happy.”
“It doesn’t have to be any of these constructs that we’ve all been fed our whole lives,” she added. “This is a different world that you get to f–king build.”
It All Boils Down to Supporting Kids
The Cougar Town star shares Birdie and daughter Cricket, 10, with ex-husband Marc Silverstein. She often stands up for causes she believes in, like LGBTQIA+ rights. In 2022, she shared a photo of her and Birdie, writing, “Quick. What do you call a parent who’s supportive of who their kid is? A parent. That’s all.” So true!
She added, “Follow and support @transtexas @aclutx @thechrismosier @kai_shappley @alokvmenon @adripereztx @gender_infinity @thejeffreymarsh. Show up. Be supportive. Amplify. Be loud. Because it might be your kid someday. But even if it’s not, what would it say about you if you only care about kids like your own?”
Support all kids, period.
