Kate Hudson’s eldest son Ryder is officially in his twenties! The Glass Onion star shared an emotional tribute to her 20-year-old on Sunday, and it’s a tear-jerking reminder for moms to not blink — because, yes, our kids really do grow up this fast.
“I’m gonna have to let this one digest for a bit..: 😭” Hudson wrote on Instagram. “My beautiful boy, happy 20th. I love you beyond @mr.ryderrobinson ✨”

She also shared a photo of Ryder’s birthday cake, with a childhood photo of Ryder printed on the icing. In it, He has long blonde hair and wide eyes that look just like his famous mama. He’s shirtless, holding a vintage camera in his tiny hand that is bigger than his whole chest. Now he’s a sophomore at New York University — and, seriously, where has the time gone?!
The Comments
People wished Ryder a happy birthday in the comments, while also lamenting the way time sifts through our fingers like sand.
“Omg 🥹🥹 and the coolest kid to ever do it HBD @mr.ryderrobinson 🎂❤️,” Rachel Zoe commented.
“Wow! I remember you pregnant with him! How fast time goes. Happy 20th birthday 🥳🎂💙,” someone else wrote.
Another parent encouraged, “❤️ Hang in there! My Jackson turned 20 in December and its a hard one. We gotta love them and let them grow into men 😭😭.” But what if we just want to keep them little boys who love their mamas more than anything, what then?? I for one can’t imagine my 6-year-old son turning 20, and now I’m going to be emotional the rest of the day.
Birthday Tributes
The Almost Famous star shares Ryder with ex Chris Robinson. She is also mom to Bingham, 12, with ex Matt Bellamy, and Rani Rose, 5, with fiancé Danny Fujikawa.
Last year, she wrote another emotional tribute to her firstborn on his 19th birthday. “Your birth changed all of our lives forever and has brought so much joy and laughter daily,” Hudson said. “Love you infinity x infinity x 3 trillion cubed.”
She has a way with words that makes me so emotional! It’s just not fair how fast our babies grow up.
Growing Up With Ryder
In an interview with The Sunday Times in Nov. 2022, the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actress opened up about how she “grew up” with her son Ryder, who she welcomed when she was 26.
“I’m definitely more present as a mother now that I’m older,” she told the outlet. “With Ryder, our relationship is so special because I grew up with him. The big learning period of my life and becoming a woman happened as I was being a mother.”
She also opened up about her unique blended family. “It might not look traditional from the outside, but on the inside, I feel like we’re killing it,” Hudson said. “The unit that I’ve created with three children with three different fathers is a seriously strong unit, and it’s ours.”
