Right up there with the Kelce family, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, his wife Brittany, and their two children are one of the most beloved families under the NFL spotlight.
The football power couple has a classic, all-American story. Brittany and Patrick began dating in high school, and they ended up attending different colleges. Each was pursuing a professional career in sports — football, obviously, for Patrick, and soccer for Brittany. They beat the odds and made long-distance work, and in 2017, they beat the odds again by seeing their dreams come to fruition. Patrick was selected by the Chiefs in the first round of the NFL draft, and Brittany signed with Iceland’s professional soccer team, Afturelding/Fram.

The former soccer star ultimately hung up her cleats, but she’s been with Patrick for every moment of his storied football career. A few months after he won his first Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2020, the MVP-winning quarterback proposed to his high school sweetheart — but one thing would end up coming before the wedding. In September that year, the same month they got engaged, the two athletes announced that they were expecting their first child together.
The Mahomeses welcomed their daughter, Sterling Skye, on February 20, 2021. A little over a year later in March 2022, Brittany and Patrick tied the knot with their baby girl in attendance — and they wasted no time getting pregnant with Baby No. 2. The couple announced they were expecting again in May 2022, and their first son, Patrick “Bronze” Lavon III, arrived on November 28, 2022.

Throughout their parenthood journey, the Mahomeses have been candid about their experiences while giving fans a glimpse into their lives via social media. Somewhere along the way, Brittany, Patrick, and their kids became Football’s First Family, with fans eagerly awaiting the next nugget of wisdom the couple is going to drop about parenthood. While we wait alongside the rest with bated breath, we’re revisiting all of the most inspiring, touching, and insightful things both Brittany and Patrick have said since becoming mom and dad to their sweet babies.
Making the Most of Every Moment
While chatting with Pro Football Talk ahead of the 2023 holiday season, Patrick Mahomes admitted, “I’m a little disappointed I’m going to miss Christmas Eve with my kids and Christmas morning and miss Santa coming.” Along with the rest of the Kansas City Chiefs, the quarterback was expected to stay at a hotel ahead of their bowl game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Setting a commendable example of how to find positives in less-than-ideal situations, the NFL star added, “I’ll be able to spend the evening with them and open presents with them then. So it’ll be a great opportunity. I’m excited for that.”
Parenting the Way He Was Parented
In August 2023, Patrick opened up about a note he’s taken out of his parents’ playbook when it comes to supporting Sterling and Bronze. He told the Kansas City Star, “I think both my parents just really taught me how to follow my dreams.”
The football player continued, “They didn’t care if I was an athlete, they didn’t care where I was going, they just told me to follow my dreams, do whatever I could to have no regrets at the end of the day. And so I think that’s what I’m trying to do with my kids now is obviously I’m trying to parent in my own way, but I want them to enjoy life,” Patrick said.
“They’re young now, but if they want to play sports, they can play sports. If they don’t, they don’t have to and [I’d tell them to] just enjoy it and to follow their dreams,” he concluded.
Balancing Football & Family
Patrick Mahomes shed light on how difficult it is to balance football and family during an episode of Netflix’s Quarterback docuseries, which debuted in 2023. The NFL player began, “Everybody sees the game days. They don’t see the day-to-day grind. They don’t see how you have to manage playing football and being a dad and being a husband.”
The dad of two went on to assert that football isn’t his be-all-end-all. “It’s football. You’re gonna have highs; you’re gonna have the lows,” Patrick said. “You put so much into this that you want to win, you want to succeed. And you want to win that Super Bowl at the end of the year,” he continued. “But I have to be a dad too. I have to be a husband.”
Praising Her Parenting Partner
Striking a balance between football and family is clearly very important to Patrick, and Brittany spoke to People about just how intentional the NFL quarterback is.
“He has a soft spot, but I think he’s done such an amazing job at balancing his work life and his at-home life, and I think he’s really switched around his priorities and figured it out,” she told the outlet in August 2023. “[He is] the best father ever.”
No Expectations, Just Encouragement
In July 2023, Patrick revealed that his daughter was walking in his wife’s footsteps — all on her own! The Super Bowl champion told E! News that Sterling had begun playing soccer, noting that he “didn’t even have to prepare her.”
“We never had taught her to play soccer, but she had watched soccer games with us just from going to the Kansas City Current games — and she literally started just kicking soccer balls into the goal,” Patrick said. “We never taught her how to kick, never taught her how to play. That’s just who she is.”
When asked about Bronze’s potential athletic ambitions, the Kansas City Chiefs player said it was a little too early to tell if he had developed any interests. “We’re getting there,” Patrick shared. “I mean, he’s still at the age we’re trying to get him to crawl. So, we’re seeing where he’s at, but I think that the biggest thing is just them following their dreams,” the dad of two sweetly added.
Setting an Example for His Kids
As the star quarterback of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes travels a lot for work — which means he spends a lot of time away from his kids. The dad of two spoke to CBS Mornings in July 2023, and during the interview, he shared his hopes that Sterling and Bronze won’t look back on his absence, but rather his legacy.
“When my kids grow up, I want them to see that dad wasn’t just gone just to be gone,” Patrick told the outlet. “I was gone doing something, to build, to be great. So, whenever they get older, they can see how hard I worked,” the pro athlete said.
Becoming More Present In All Areas of Life
Through parenting, Patrick learned how to appreciate every moment of life. During his CBS Mornings interview, the athlete shared, “I think now, being able to go home and see my daughter and see my son, I have a better understanding of being present and enjoying it.”
He’s not just soaking up every second of his kids’ childhoods — he’s following the philosophy in every area of his life. Patrick added, “That translates to the football field, and we’ve been on a heck of a run, but I’m trying to enjoy those moments because I know it doesn’t last forever even though we want it to.”
On Parenthood & Their Relationship
Break out the tissues for this one — while chatting with TODAY in July 2023, Patrick Mahomes shared a heartfelt sentiment about how parenthood had impacted his and Brittany’s relationship.
The football star said, “I fall in love with my wife all over again every time I see her parenting.” Patrick continued, “My daughter is at that age where she wants both of us to put her to sleep. I’ll sit back and watch her read to [Sterling] and those are the moments I’ll always remember.” So, so sweet.
The Unexpected Joy of Motherhood
For Mother’s Day 2023, Brittany Mahomes shared an incredibly touching post on Instagram. Alongside a series of beautiful family photos, she wrote, “Mom. Part of my purpose and my main priority.”
“These two have impacted my life and I cherish every last second with them,” the former professional soccer player continued. “They make all my days the best days. Never could I have imagined having two of the most perfect little additions to our family.”
Brittany gushed, “I love them beyond anything I could ever say and I’m so so so thankful to be their mama. I knew becoming a mom was gonna be amazing but man have they have made it better then I could have ever thought🥹💕”
Maintaining an Identity Outside of Motherhood
In April 2023, Brittany Mahomes hosted a Q&A on her Instagram Story. When one fan asked the mom of two for her thoughts on the hardest part of being a mom, she opened up about the struggle of maintaining her personal identity while fulfilling her duties as a parent.
“I think for me it was just still learning to make time for yourself and other stuff and not just solely your child!” Brittany wrote. “Life is still moving when you have a kiddo so obviously they become your main priority but you can’t just forget about everything else you did before,” she opined.
Getting Candid About Having Help — & Mom Guilt
During her April 2023 Q&A, the Kansas City Currents co-owner was also asked if she has any help at home with Sterling and Bronze. Brittany candidly answered, “Yes, I have help 😂 And I’m very thankful for it! Chef, nanny, a virtual assistant lol, and our security team,” she specified.
The former professional soccer player’s followers also asked if she experiences mom guilt. “100%,” Brittany admitted. “I often feel bad having help with them and not being able to just do it all on my own. Also leaving them, not good at that part.”
Thanking His Biggest Fans
During Patrick Mahomes’ 2023 NFL Honors MVP award acceptance speech, he gave a heartfelt shoutout to his biggest fans. “To my wife, Brittany, my baby girl, Sterling, and my son, Bronze, this crazy life that we are living means nothing without y’all keeping me balanced and making me appreciate every single day,” he began.
The quarterback continued, “No matter how I feel coming home, y’all bring me joy and make me appreciate the time that I get to spend with y’all. Thank you for always being there for me during my good times and my bad. Love y’all.”
Going From One Child to Two
A few days after welcoming her son Bronze, Brittany Mahomes shared a special shoutout for her daughter Sterling. The proud mama posted a carousel of photos of the little girl with her caption reading, “Just a little emotional today thinking about how blessed I am and how proud of this little angel I am. She has been doing so good as a big sister.”
The Kansas City Currents co-owner continued, “She loves her brother so much & has been just the best little helper!!🤍 I felt like so many people were trying to put this negative idea of how much she was gonna hate not being the only child into my head & it was kind of starting to upset me,” Brittany confessed.
She continued, “If you are a new mom, or about to become a mama of multiple kiddos, just know everyone’s story is different & don’t let other people’s ideas get to you! It’s your family & your own journey. It will all workout, stay positive and enjoy every second of it🙏🏼🤍,” the former professional athlete encouraged.
Teaching Sterling How to Be a Big Sister
Shortly after Bronze’s birth in November 2022, Patrick opened up about how Sterling was adjusting to life as a big sister. “She’s figuring it out,” the Chiefs player said on The Drive podcast.
“She wants to hold him and take care of him, and everything like that,” he continued. “She loves her little brother. She wants to play all day, and we have to tell her to be gentle. And we have to tell her, ‘Don’t throw him like a toy baby,'” the dad of two added.
Watching His Little Girl Grow Up
In September 2022, Patrick opened up about how much he was enjoying the toddler stage with Sterling. During a sports radio interview, the Texas Tech alum said, “She’s definitely getting older now. She’s a kid now; she’s a toddler, not a baby anymore.”
“It’s cool when you go home and she recognizes you, and does what you’re asking her to do, and she’s super smart,” the proud dad gushed. He added, “[It’s] definitely cool to see her grow up.”
The Source of Her Inspiration
When Brittany Mahomes collaborated with Vitality to launch an athleisure collection in 2022, the proud mama credited her daughter with driving the vision of the special project.
“My motivation, my priority, my best girl,” Brittany captioned a promotional video on Instagram. “Sterling Skye, I hope you know you can do anything you set your mind to. My sweet Sterling was the inspo behind my collection with @shopvitality launching 9.12 at 12 pm MT 💙⛅️✨,” she concluded.
Success From a Mother’s Perspective
In the promotional video for her clothing collection with Vitality, Brittany shared what she considers success. “I hope to teach Sterling to be the most kind, gentle, loving human on this planet while also being that badass she needs to be when she grows up,” the former pro athlete said.
She continued, “You know success is a little bit different when you have kids involved. And if I made it through and Sterling got everything she needed, that’s success in my world nowadays.” Brittany reiterated, “I hope she grows up to be a kind, gentle soul with that good sassy attitude that she needs to change the world.”
Being on Dad Time
Ahead of New Year’s Eve 2021, Patrick hilariously admitted that staying up for the ball drop is a bit of a lift these days. During an interview with The Drive on 610 Sports Radio, the Kansas City Chiefs player said, “I will try to make it to 12-something, but these days that’s kind of late for me being the dad that I am now.”
Soaking Up Every Moment
In July 2021, Patrick Mahomes gushed about experiencing parenthood with his wife. “It’s been amazing. Brittany’s been a champ, she’s been the best mom ever, so I’m just excited every single day for the new challenges and seeing [Sterling] grow,” the football player told TODAY.
Getting Vaccinated for His Daughter’s Safety
When questioned on why he decided to get a second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in 2021, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback explained that he wanted to do his part to keep his daughter healthy.
“To me, it was more of a personal decision with having a baby girl and knowing that I was going to be around people,” he told reporters. “I wanted to make sure I could do whatever I could to help keep her healthy.”
Balancing Privacy & Practicality
Many celebrity parents struggle to determine how much they should share their children with the world, and the Mahomeses are no exception. In July 2021, Patrick opened up about the complexities of the choice and how he and Brittany have had to modify their original plan for the sake of practicality.
“Obviously at first we wanted to keep stuff private and not have [Sterling] out there,” the NFL player told TODAY. “As we started doing different things and she started getting a little bit older, being out and about, it almost became like a burden to try to hide her at all times when we do stuff, and this coming season we want her to be at the games and not have to worry about hiding her the entire time,” Patrick explained.
He added that he relates to Sterling’s situation from being the child of a professional athlete himself — Patrick Mahomes Sr. played in the MLB from 1992 to 2003 — but he recognizes that it’s not entirely the same. “It’s going to be a little different in the social media age and everything like that,” the Super Bowl champion said.
Patrick sweetly added, “We just want to give her the most normal life that she possibly can so she can grow and have friends and learn and get better and better every single day.”
Sharing Her Thoughts on Posting Photos of Ster
In March 2021, Brittany also opened up about her feelings on sharing photos of Sterling. She addressed the matter on her Instagram Story, writing, “[For those] that are so concerned about where Sterling has been or if we’ve been leaving her or what she looks like and when we’re gonna post a photo … she’s been with us everywhere we go.”
The former pro athlete continued, “I just love keeping her to ourselves and to our family. I just don’t need her blasted all over the internet and everyone posting photos of her.” Like her husband, Brittany recognized that they might change their minds as their daughter gets older. “Maybe one day we will, maybe one day we won’t. Who knows?” Years later, we certainly do! The mom of two added, “But I hope you guys respect that and understand.”
On Her Breastfeeding Journey
After nearly a year of breastfeeding Sterling, Brittany Mahomes decided to phase breast milk out of her daughter’s diet. She documented her final day of breastfeeding on her Instagram Story, writing, “Last feed of breast milk today 😭 Very emotional LOL.”
The Kansas City Currents co-owner continued, “Did it 10 months (last 2 months just exclusively pumping), but I was just ready to be done, but also like why is this so hard? Moms send help …” she wrote atop a photo of herself and Sterling.
Brittany added that she had to remove dairy from her diet due to her daughter’s food allergies, so in celebration of her final feed, she planned to “go indulge in chocolate milk & ice cream.” Well deserved!
Sleep Is Key
While chatting with TODAY in 2021, Patrick shared the most important strategy he and Brittany had picked up on their parenting journey. “We learned the two most important words in being parents is ‘sleep schedule,'” he joked.
The pro athlete continued, “We have the sleep schedule down. [Sterling is] actually a really good sleeper. She already sleeps through the night. She wakes up about at 6 a.m., just about when I wake up usually,” he relayed.
On Working With a Sleep Coach
For her part, Brittany took to her Instagram Story to share exactly how she was able to get Sterling on a sleep schedule. The former pro soccer player explained that she hired a sleep coach who “came in and worked with Sterling for three days to start the process.”
“It was a lot at first and at one point, I thought I couldn’t do it, so for a few days I took her off the schedule and it went back to a mess,” Brittany wrote. She explained that she found success with the method after giving it another chance, and that Sterling consequently transforming into “the happiest best baby [who] sleeps a full 12 hours at night.”
The Impact of Fatherhood
When asked how fatherhood had changed him during an April 2021 interview with Forbes, Patrick Mahomes sweetly shared, “I think it’s changed me in a sense that you’re just so appreciative of every single day and the little things. For me, going to workout and going home and seeing [Sterling], I’m so happy and excited to see her every single day.”
A Learning Experience
Two months after becoming a dad, Patrick Mahomes opened up about what the new experience had been like. Per Fox 4, the quarterback shared during a media call: “I’ve had to learn a lot there, probably more than I’ve learned in my entire life until now. How to take care of a baby and raise a little baby girl and try to give her the best opportunity and the best life as possible.”
An Exciting New Chapter
During a post-Super Bowl interview in February 2021, Patrick spoke about how thrilled he was to become a father in a few short days. “Hopefully [Brittany] gets all the way to her due date, but I mean really, anytime, I could be having a baby girl and I’m super excited about that,” the Kansas City Chiefs player told the media (per Outsider).
He added, “It’s gonna be something special, and I’m excited for the journey of trying to find ways to better myself and become the best dad that I can be.”
