There are two types of people in this world: those who find toilet humor funny, and those who don’t. If you’re someone who does — and you happen to be a parent — you’re gonna want to give these fart books place of pride on your kid’s bookshelf. That’s right: there are actually a ton of kids’ books about farts. Who knew? And not to (ahem) toot our own horn, but we’re pretty sure this is the fart book roundup to end all fart book roundups.

There’s no better way to foster a love of reading than to read your kids something they think is hilarious. So we like to think these books are doing our children a major solid in the long run. OK, so they may not be teaching educational fundamentals, but they’re teaching something equally important: that reading can be fun. And isn’t that ultimately the goal?

Even our ancestors thought farts were funny. The first known joke was — you guessed it — a  fart joke that can be traced back to the ancient Sumerians in approximately 1900 B.C.: “Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband’s lap.” Roland le Sarcere, court minstrel to King Henry II, could fart on cue in a dance so hilarious that the king gifted him a manor house and 100 acres of land. Benjamin Franklin wrote an essay called “Fart Proudly” in 1781. So really, by sharing these books with your kids, you’re continuing a rich tradition upheld since the beginning of time: laughing at farts.

Whether your kids are reading about a flatulent flamingo, a socially-awkward little fart who’s struggling to make friends, or absorbing all sorts of farty facts and trivia, these fart books are amazingly funny, irreverent, and yes — even a little heartfelt (er, fart-felt?).
