Every year our calendar fills up with baby showers, and while we love getting the chance to celebrate the parents-to-be, and we love a good shower (especially one with a super-creative theme!), we often find ourselves less than thrilled to be participating in the festivities. Is anyone else so. over. the traditional baby shower games? They’re supposed to be fun, but does anybody really want to play the same awful diaper-smelling game? Nope. Not us.
The same goes for “guess the baby food flavor” and taking bets on how large the mom-to-be’s belly is. (Who decided the latter was ok, by the way?!) They’re expensive, they’re wasteful, they’re cringe-worthy and, frankly, they’ve run their course. But luckily, there are a few not-too-painful baby shower games that anyone can have a blast playing.
We’ve rounded up some of the best baby shower games to help break up the endless cycle of tissue paper and cake. Don’t worry: Nobody will roll their eyes at these games. In fact, we’re pretty sure everyone will be having too much fun to care whether they look silly.
A version of this story was originally published in June 2016.
DIY Baby ABCs Book
Got a crafty group of guests? Give each person at the baby shower a page of this alphabet book, and let them decorate it for Baby. Even little kids who have tagged along can help out by coloring in or helping adults brainstorm what “A is for.” After the shower, the mom-to-be (or a member of her proverbial village) can compile the pages into a beautiful DIY book.
Pin the Sperm on the Egg
This reproductive version of pin the tail on the donkey is a funny baby shower game that’s sure to be a huge hit. “This was such a fun game!” one happy Amazon shopper said. “Very durable. It’s even reusable if you’re careful. Everyone had a blast!” (Guess you know what game you’ll be playing at a potential Baby Sprinkle!)
Find the “Real” Baby
Time for a futuristic baby shower game. This baby is being born into the Age of AI, so why not embrace that now? Use an app like MixMatch to get an idea of what the baby will look like by simply uploading a photo of both parents. Then swap out one parent’s photo for some celebrities.
Hang up the pictures and have guests guess which baby is the “real” one. Bonus points go to guests who can guess which celebrity was the virtual sperm or egg donor in the other photos.
Deep Diaper Thoughts
OK so this easy baby shower game isn’t a game game, but it is super touching. Have everyone sign the outside of a diaper with an encouraging note to get new parents through those middle-of-the-night diaper changes. A sweet and useful activity!
Guess Who?
We love this interactive baby shower game that’s perfect for pop culture-obsessed guests. Write down the names of various famous moms (or dads!) on sticky notes or name tags and place them on guests’ backs. While they’re mingling, they can ask questions to try and figure out which famous parent they are. A Kardashian, perhaps?!
Hilarious This Or That
In this hilarious and unique baby shower game, guests have to guess if the woman in the photo is in the middle of delivering a baby or making a baby. (*Wink wink*) Amazon shoppers agreed it was a surefire way to get people laughing.
Custom ‘Fits
Similarly to the DIY ABC book, guests can decorate a plain bodysuit or bib for the little one. Don’t worry about whether you’re the most artistic guest. Parents will be so happy to have some sentimental clothing. And hey, if it looks like sh*t, they won’t feel so bad throwing it out if it gets covered in … ya know. (Blowouts are bound to happen!)
Diaper Pong
Just when the parents-to-be assume their days of [beer] pong are behind them, pop out this game that’s the perfect blend of pong and darts. With this laidback baby shower game, guests aim for the diaper with the most points. At the very least, a high score will earn them some bragging rights!
Name That Tune
Time to give the music buffs a chance to win (or at least get an ego boost!) with this printable baby game sheet and adorable idea. Load up a playlist of songs with the word “baby” in them, then play small snippets so your guests can guess the song and artist.
Baby Scattergories
A baby-themed round of Scattergories like this free and printable one from Lemon Thistle makes a great icebreaker if you have people work in pairs.
The object of the game? Guests have to think of things from each category (baby clothes, baby toys, baby names, etc.) that start with each letter in BABY. That “Y” will be trickier than you think! Depending on how competitive your crowd is, you can adjust the time limit for each line.
Pass The Prize
As much as I love showering the parents-to-be with gifts, I dread the portion of a baby shower when it’s time to watch the Guest of Honor unwrap their gifts. Make it more exciting for the “audience” with a customizable game of Pass The Prize. You pick the prize, you pick the rules.
For example, you could get a $15 gift card to Amazon. Hand it to a random guest along with a note that says, “Pass the prize two to the left if the gift is blue. Pass the prize one to the right if it’s hard to open. Pass the prize three to the left if there’s a big “Awww!” Pass the prize two to the right if the gift has to be explained.” (You get the idea!)
Draw the Baby
This draw the baby game from Fun Cheap or Free takes pennies to pull off but is tons of fun. In this budget-friendly baby shower game, guests put a notecard on their forehead and then draw the baby’s first “portrait.”
You may not want to keep their “masterpiece,” but be sure to hold onto the markers! Your bundle of joy will be reaching for them before you know it.
