Babies are adorable. Baby gear is adorable too; all of the itty-bitty diapers and the teeny-weeny onesies are undoubtedly very cute. They also really start to add up in cost fast… which makes babies and their avalanche of super-cute gear extremely expensive as well. That is, of course, if you don’t know where to get a stash of sweet free samples.
We do, and we’ve done a dump of the good stuff here. Just a quick word of caution: A lot of people have a relaxed sense of the word free. To get some of these goodies, you may have to pay for shipping or set a reminder to cancel a service. It’s up to you to decide whether or not the juice is worth the squeeze. We think it is!
Target registry welcome kit
Let’s start with the really good stuff. A bunch of popular stores have welcome kits that come with a registry sign-up, which you’re probably doing anyway. When you sign up for one at Target, visit guest servces to get a bag that’s stocked with $50 worth of stuff, including a MAM pacifier, Munchkin Bottle and Lansinoh pads.
BuyBuyBaby free goody bag
Again, you’ll have to visit an actual store to pick up the goody bag that comes with BuyBuyBaby’s registry sign-up. People have reported getting everything from diaper rash cream to bags for pumping breastmilk in theirs.
Babies ‘R Us welcome bag
Same deal here. You can create your registry online or in person, but you’ll have to go inside the actual store to get the goods. From what we can tell, the swag inside tends to vary. Sometimes it’s great, with stuff like Lansinoh products, ice packs and tons of coupons, and other times… not so much.
Amazon baby welcome box
When you make a registry on Amazon, you can score a whole box of neat samples that include pacifiers, wipes and stuff for baby’s bath time, and then some! Just follow the instructions on the registry page to make sure that yours is added to your cart.
Walmart baby box
So this one is one of those free-but-not-quite jobs we talked about before. Walmart will send you a box of mystery baby stuff for free, but you’ll have to cough up $5 for the shipping. They’ve even got a few varieties: prenatal, newborn and toddler.
Enfamil Family Beginnings
Enfamil Family Beginnings will send you a whole slew of freebies and coupons. Besides just formula samples, they’ve been known to send along items like diaper bags, coolers and ice packs.
Nestlé Baby Program
Nestlé will stock a not-bad-looking diaper bag with a can of formula and a free sample of their rice cereal as well as a whole bunch of coupons, all for free.
Free Dollar Diaper Club box
Here’s another free-trial “freebie.” You have a choice between either the Organic Diaper and Wipes Bundle or the Baby Product Bundle — with shampoo, lotion and the like — delivered to your door. Because it’s a subscription box, though, you’ll have to remember to cancel it before it renews. If you love it, you may want to check out these other subscription boxes for moms.
EverydayHappy trial box
Get one of this sustainable-living company’s diaper care kits on the house. If you like it, great! If you just came for the free stuff, you’ll have to remember to cancel your subscription.
Free baby leggings
You can get five pairs of adorable leggings from Baby Leggings as long as you’re willing to pay for the shipping and handling. Just use the code ENBABY at check out, and they’re all yours. These ones usually retail for $10.
Free nursing pillow
In frugal mom circles, the reviews on this one are mixed. On the one hand, the nursing pillow on offer from Nursing Pillows isn’t exactly Boppy-quality. On the other hand, well, it’s free. Or it will be if you enter the code PILLOW15 at checkout. Otherwise, a pillow like this would cost $40.
Free nursing cover
If you like the privacy that a nursing cover can provide, you may as well get one for free. And honestly, free stuff doesn’t usually look as nice as these covers do. Over at Udder Covers, this one usually goes for $40 bucks, but by using the checkout code PJBABY, you can get yours for the cost of shipping and handling.
Free baby sling
You can also grab a free baby sling by heading over to Seven Slings’ website and choosing your favorite. Again, you’ll have to pay for shipping, but at least the main event is free with code SLINGME1. This particular sling usually retails on the site for $65.
Free carseat cover
For a free carseat cover, you can visit Carseat Canopy, purveyor of, well, carseat canopies and matching accessories, and choose one you like. Again, shipping and handling is on you, but you can get the actual cover for free with the checkout code FREE4. Otherwise, this canopy would run you $50.
Free faux fur baby hat
You can score one of these adorable winter hats from Eskimo Baby for free with the code ENBABY at checkout — again, you’ll be responsible for the shipping and handling.
Five free board books
It’s never too early to start stocking a library for your little one, and you may as well let someone else pick up the tab while you’re at it. Yes, you’ll have to pay for shipping and handling, but you can also get five free books with the fairly straightforward checkout code GET5FREEBOOKS on Babsy B.
Baby Einstein welcome package
Speaking of books, you can get a few free from Baby Einstein in their welcome bundle. But if you don’t plan on keeping your membership active with the company, make sure that you follow the instructions to cancel before the 30-day trial period ends. Otherwise, this one will be much more expensive than free.
Free organic formula
You can grab a free can of organic, GMO-free baby formula for your baby over at Nature’s One. Pay about $6 in shipping and you can try one of seven products after you fill out a short survey.
Free Baby Edition Noobie Box
Sadly, this one goes out of stock really fast and is only available in three states right now. But if you live in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut, you’re in luck. There isn’t even a subscription to cancel. Just pay $7 for shipping and enjoy $50 worth of full-sized products.
Free pacifier
You can snag a free thermometer pacifier at Funtastic Media. The little dot on the end of the pacifier is green unless your baby’s temperature hits 100 degrees F or higher; then it turns black. Use the linked form on the product page to request a sample of your own.
Free cake!
When you’re ready to celebrate your baby’s first birthday, if you have a Publix or Farm Fresh grocery store nearby, you can get a free smash cake for the requisite messy photo-op. Just be sure to let them know that you’ll need one when you’re ordering the big cake at the bakery.
Free lullaby album
Need some fresh tunes for your baby? To celebrate a breastfeeding campaign, the Texas Department of State Health Services has a free lullaby album called Sing to Me: A Lullaby Album available for download. No strings here, just free music.
Free bib
You could spend a fortune on personalized baby gear, or you could just grab some for free. When you fill out a short survey on EGifts, they’ll send you a personalized Velcro bib for your trouble, gratis.
Free baby book
Finally, here’s a way to keep a record of your baby’s big firsts without going broke on scrapbooking supplies or buying a book with more pages than there are days in the year. Megan over at C’mon Get Crafty has a printable back-to-basics version that lets you earn the kept-a-baby-book merit badge while your baby is still small.
