Designing a room is usually fun, but when you’re doing it for a soon-to-be-born person, it feels extra exciting. And all that decorating can be a perfect project for pregnant folks who feel suddenly, um, overcome with nesting instincts. I for one channeled so much of my pregnant energy into designing what I thought was the perfect nursery for my daughter. But there are so many options and ideas (and expenses) floating around, the nursery process can feel super-overwhelming. That’s where — of course — Pinterest comes in.
But wait: Sure, Pinterest is a fantastic place for decorating inspiration, but do you really want to be stuck scrolling for hours? I know I don’t. So for your quick-perusal pleasure, we’ve distilled the best trends from the online aesthetic mecca that is Pinterest. Because incorporating a key trend or two can really give your nursery a push in the right direction, and it’s easy to build around certain standout pieces. We’ve also put together a few tips from Los Angeles-based interior decorating duo Robynn Markus and Danielle Nettler, aka Hartwick & June, that are sure to give your room vision life. Click ahead for all you need to create the baby space of your (and kiddo’s) dreams.
Wallpaper
“It’s all about wallpaper right now,” says Markus. Find a funky print you love for your little one, and go to town. “If you’re willing to tackle the trend head-on, do a full wall,” she suggests. If you love the idea but are a bit more tentative, paper a wall that’s broken up with windows or a door. Check out this sweet nursery featuring the Oh Deer mural paper from Anewall.
Children’s book illustrations
If you’re looking for an alternative to wallpaper — and are OK with chopping up some old literature — decorating with art from kids’ books is a whimsical take. “If you’re on a budget or are scared of wallpaper, cut out pages from some incredibly illustrated children’s books,” says Markus. “Get yourself some cheap frames from yard sales or thrift stores and create a gallery wall.”
Bent-wood rocker
This boho desert chic room featured on Project Nursery incorporates a few popular trends (cacti, greenery, hanging plants, sheepskin… we could go on) but the bent-wood rocker in a neutral shade stands out as a statement piece. Find this one on Amazon or check out Ikea’s version, the Poäng rocking chair.
Letter boards
Letter boards (like the ones from Letterfolk) are taking social media by storm — and for good reason. There are plenty of possibilities. You can display your favorite quotes, use the letters in milestone photo shoots, you name it. Photographer Paige Jones incorporated a letter board perfectly into her botanical-inspired Portland nursery featured on Bloglovin’.
Vintage map
“Vintage is always in style,” says Markus. “We love a great big vintage map; you get scale, color and education.” Can’t argue with that. This U.S. map featured on the blog Brittany Makes was a thrift-store find from Monterey, California. For the non-thrifters among you, look no further than this world map with a vintage feel from Urban Outfitters.
Colorful crib
Gray is no longer the go-to for nurseries. Try a pop of color on your crib. I painted an Ikea crib emerald green for my son’s modern woodsy nursery, and I love how it turned out, especially when combined with the feather sheet and quilt my mom made. (Rich greens are another current trend.) Check out more nurseries on Kaydee Baby’s blog.
Honeycomb shelves
Add a little edge with a cool geometric shelving unit to display tchotchkes. The honeycomb shelving in Koda’s gender-neutral nursery (pictured) is handmade, but you can find similar shelves at Land of Nod or World Market. Koda’s room, featured on blog Lot 801, incorporates another big decorating trend: the ubiquitous fiddle leaf fig.
Retro bedding
Colorful cartoon classic Care Bears are getting a tasteful nursery remake in this new line from Land of Nod. These retro sheets and quilt are a sweet way to incorporate your own childhood favorites while decorating for your kid. Plus, the line has all sorts of coordinating pieces: rugs, wall art, chairs, etc. Where else could you get away with Care Bear decor in your house? OK, maybe don’t answer that.
Woven wall hanging
This Southwest-inspired nursery featured on Style Me Pretty includes a cool textile wall hanging. These boho pieces are perfect for nurseries, living rooms… pretty much any room you like. If you’re in the market for one, you don’t have to look far anymore. Find woven wall hangings everywhere from big-box retailers like Target to online handcrafted haven Etsy.
