Brooke Shields Shared the Best Comeback for Being Mom-Shamed About Her Matching Tattoo With Her Daughter

Brooke Shields should absolutely be in the running for the Coolest Mom Ever. (In fact, I’d go ahead and hand the award to her myself, but I think my mom might take slight offense to that … )
Because ICYMI: The award-winning actress has three matching tattoos with her daughters — one with her 18-year-old daughter Grier and two with her 21-year-old daughter Rowan, both of whom she shares with husband Chris Henchy. While some teens are on their hands and knees begging their parents to let them get inked, Shields is sitting right beside her girls, not only giving them permission to get tatted, but adorably twinning with them.
And, as you might imagine, people have a lot of feelings about that. We’ll get to that in a second, but first, we have to talk about the women’s stunning art.
Shields and Grier have an ultra-sweet tattoo of two sets of high heels facing each other. On the right, the heels fit the person’s feet perfectly. On the left, it looks like a child’s feet are in the shoes that are way too big.
Ahead of her appearance at Flow Space presents An Evening with Brooke Shields, Shields revealed to SheKnows that Grier used to constantly walk around in heels — even as a toddler. “Every morning, in a big heavy diaper or nude, she’d be in my high heels,” she says.
Shields — who just released her memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed To Get Old — also shares a ladybug tattoo and the phrase “and to a party” with Rowan. The proud mom exclusively told SheKnows the heartwarming story of a young Rowan saying, “I love you to the moon,” to which Shields responded, “I love you to the moon and back.”
“The next night, she said ‘I love you to the moon and back and to a party,'” Shields recalls. “And I was like, ‘Mic drop. You win. That is the best.”
(We’re not crying, you’re crying!)
Now, back to the public’s Big Feelings. Some people think these tattoos are a beautiful display of mother-daughter bonding. (Raises hand!) And, of course, some are not fans. The Mother of the Bride star recently saw a comment criticizing the “stupid” party tattoo. And while we were fuming at the mere mention of this mom shamer, Shields had the most refreshing and empathetic attitude about the situation.
“My heart broke for the person because I was like, ‘I hope you have someone in your life that loves you that much,'” she says. ” … I felt bad for the person even though they were, you know, hurling vitriol at me. I took the high road.”
And wow. Not many moms can take that high road (understandably!) when busybodies have the audacity to criticize their families and their parenting. Like we said: Coolest! Mom! Ever!
If you’re now itching to get a matching tattoo with your kiddo but are somehow in a situation where you have to convince them to go all in, Shields recommends sitting back.
“Really let them weigh in on choosing and don’t try to micromanage it,” she says. ” … I said, ‘You find it, you pick it.’ … I really put it all in their court.” And because of that, she now has three beautiful, meaningful pieces of art to cherish and an equally beautiful new outlook.
