DIY dog training: The best YouTube videos around

Dog trainers can do amazing things with your pet pooch — but they are expensive. Wouldn’t it be great to train your dog from home? With little more than a laptop and a leash, you can teach your pet these 10 tricks we found on YouTube.

Dogs truly are man’s best friend — when they listen to us, at least. Training your dog to do basic commands and a cute trick or two is a great way to establish your relationship from the start. Professional dog trainers can be pricey, so why not try to train your pup on your own? There are lots of great videos on YouTube on how to train your dog. We rounded up a few of our favorites you can try with your best friend.

Sit

Teaching your dog to sit is one of the most important things you can do. Not only are you establishing your relationship as the “master,” but you are protecting your dog from situations that could put him in danger. This video from Teacher’s Pet with Victoria Stilwell uses hand signals and treats to work up to the command “sit,” and is an easy way to introduce this basic command.

Stay

In addition to the command “sit,” training a dog to stay is critical to his safety. Learning to stay entails teaching a dog to sit still through a number of distractions, for an amount of time you specify. It’s important to use positive reinforcement and keep the training sessions short. The expert is Nancy Cusick of TrainMyDogs.com. Nancy is Austin, Texas’ premier dog trainer and animal handler, and she has more than 12 years of experience.

Come

The command “come,” also known as returning on recall, is critical to your dog’s safety when out and off-leash. Whether it’s another dog or a squirrel that provides the distraction, expert trainer Gwen Bailey shows you how to recall your dog in any situation.

Roll over

While it’s not a critical skill to teach your dog, the command “roll over” is cute and fun to show off to your friends! This video features Chad Culp, who is a certified dog trainer and canine behavior specialist at ThrivingCanine.com.

Heel

Teaching your dog to heel will make walking a breeze. A relatively simple command, “heel” means that your dog stays by your side — on a leash or off. This video from Teacher’s Pet with Victoria Stilwell will help you teach your dog to heel.

Shake hands

This isn’t a necessary trick, but it’s a classic! Training your dog to shake hands on command is going to take lots of repetition and reward. This video will show you all the steps you need to follow to get your pet to respond to the “shake” command. This is a super-cute trick, guaranteed to please!

Greet house guests

When someone comes to your home to visit, does your dog go crazy? Teaching your dog to appropriately greet guests and remain calm is an important skill. People don’t like dogs who can’t behave, and their behavior reflects on you. Once your dog has mastered how to sit and stay, the next behavior should be to remain calm when a guest enters your home. This video shows how to work through training this behavior — with both on-the-leash and off-the-leash training.

Crate training

Crate training is a method of training your dog that you may or may not choose to follow. Crate training is not only a method for potty training your dog, but it encompasses all aspects of your dog’s life. This video explains how to crate-train your puppy and the basic fundamentals behind crate training. Kathy Santo is a professional dog trainer and her tips and ideas are very helpful.

Stop puppy play-biting

If you have a young puppy, you know those teeth are sharp! When they are young, they play by biting each other and wrestling, which isn’t a popular way to play with people. Certified professional dog trainer Dee Hoult is known as the “Doggie Deeva,” and she gives a quick lesson on how to correct unwanted puppy play-biting.
