There are surprises, and then there’s the moment you realize a cat is hanging on the wing of a glider you’re flying. That’s what happened to this pair mid-flight, and I honestly don’t know who was more traumatized, them or their parachuteless feline passenger.
The excursion starts out simply enough. A woman in French Guyana is taking a glider ride with a licensed instructor. I’m sure she thought the trip would be somewhat exciting, but nothing could’ve prepared her for what pops up on the left wing.
One of the best parts of the video is the instructor’s reaction. He notices the feline stowaway way before his female passenger, and his eyes look like they’re popping out of his head. I’m kind of amazed how long it takes the woman to notice the cat, especially because it’s on her side of the plane, but then again, I suppose it’s hard to communicate “there’s a cat above you!” when you’re flying in open air.
Anyone getting flashbacks to that Twilight Zone episode with William Shatner where he sees the monster on the wing? I’m sure it wasn’t that scary, since it’s just a cute cat trying to hold on for dear life rather than a plane engine-destroying monster, but the surprise factor must’ve been similar.
The pilot says on the YouTube page that he had done a pre-flight check and didn’t find the cat, so she must’ve jumped on afterwards. I have to hand it to her — that is pretty impressive to hang on like that while a plane is taking off and landing. Thankfully, according to the pilot, she sustained no injuries during her quick flying experience. However, I imagine it will be quite some time before she decides to camp out in a glider plane again.
