The idea of celebrating 15 years seems incredible to most of us at Petfinder. To be part of more than 17 million adoptions — so many lives saved — and to work with so many dedicated people in animal welfare; it still fills me with awe every single day. I am beyond excited that this weekend, from July 15 to July 17, we are launching our first ever adoption event. It is rightfully named the Big Birthday Adoption Event, because we expect BIG results and a BIG impact among communities and families.
Petfinder turns 15
While many know Petfinder.com as a website in which you can find (and fall in love with) your new best friend, what you may not realize is that we are a network of more than 13,500 shelters and rescue groups across North America, joining everyone together in one ongoing effort to save animals’ lives. We strive to promote adoptable pets online, and our shelter and rescue members tell us that being able to post their adoptable pets on Petfinder.com has increased their adoptions by leaps and bounds. While we feel rewarded and proud of what Petfinder.com has helped to accomplish, we decided that for our 15th birthday it is time to use this amazing network and expand from online to on-the-ground, truly shining a national spotlight on adoption.
The Event
Starting this Friday, July 15, more than 1,500 Petfinder.com member shelters and rescue groups are participating in the Big Birthday Adoption Event by holding an event at their facility or by joining with other local adoption organizations in their community. Considering the fact that most adoption events are regional, this has the opportunity to be huge from an animal welfare perspective. So, we have set the goal at 15,000 adoptions across North America.

We’re hoping this will give that little extra push to everyone out there who has been considering adopting a pet and is ready to make that commitment. For those who are, there is no better time to rescue an adoptable pet who needs a loving home. Simply go to Petfinder.com/birthday, find a participating local shelter or rescue group, and stop by their event. Chances are, there is a pet out there who is looking for a family and needs you just as much as you need them.
I remember when we first started Petfinder.com, hoping that we could save at least one life a month. Now we’re holding events where we aim to save 15,000 lives in one weekend! We couldn’t be in a better place, and even though we have a long way to go before adoptable pets are no longer euthanized, we’re doing it one step -and now one event- at a time.
