My dog hates the cold. It makes her joints ache and snowballs build up between her toes when we go for walks. Like me, she would much rather stay in bed than go outside in the winter.
She is not alone. These 10 dog breeds hate cold weather more than you do, and with good reason.
Dachshunds
Dachshunds get a double-whammy when it comes to winter time. Not only do short-haired dachshunds have thin winter coats that do little to protect them from cold weather, but the breed’s ridiculously short legs make it hard for them to navigate deep drifts. For a dachshund, any snowdrift is deep.
Chihuahuas
These little guys don’t have much in the way of protective layering. Their thin fur and cold intolerance mean they only enjoy cold weather if witnessed from the comfort of a toasty handbag or, better yet, from inside your jacket.

Basset Hound
Like Dachshunds, Basset Hounds are burdened with stubby legs and long bodies. As if dragging their bellies along the snow wasn’t bad enough, there are also those ears to worry about! Frostbitten ears are no fun for anyone.
Greyhounds
They might be fast, but when temperatures fall these speed racers much prefer cuddling on the couch to shivering outdoors. The ones that like to play outside need coats for longer winter excursions, not to mention protective booties to keep their paws from freezing. Their thin coats and lack of body fat put them at risk of hypothermia.
Doberman Pinschers
It is hard to imagine the intimidating Doberman Pinscher scared of anything, but cold weather just might do it. Despite their Germanic origins, this breed is not very cold tolerant and is happiest outside in the winter with a dog coat wrapped tightly around their fearsome selves.
Chinese Crested
This breed has a very good reason for hating the cold. With only a handful of hair to go around, they are literally naked in the elements.
Whippets
Like Greyhounds, Whippets are fleet of feet and even quicker to freeze. Their thin coats don’t do them much good against cold, wet, or snowy days. The good news is that this noble breed looks very distinguished in a sweater set.
Yorkshire Terrier
Petite and feisty, Yorkies (and their relatives, the Yorkie-Poo) are no match for winter. These little guys can’t see over more than a few inches of snow, and not only does their silky hair fail to keep them warm, it also mats and tangles. You might have to spend a few minutes de-icing the snowballs from your Yorkie with a hair drier.

Pit Bulls
Nothing is quite as pathetic as a burly pit bull shivering at the back door after only a few minutes of snowy playtime. Pitbulls and cold weather don’t mix. Pack these pups into a sweater to help their thin coats battle the cold.
French Bulldogs
The only thing worse than hating the cold is hating the cold and the heat. French Bulldogs shiver in the cold, thanks to their thin coats, but their short noses can’t keep up with their panting in hot weather, either. These guys prefer to stay indoors with you, enjoying the benefits of heat and AC.
The good news for these dog breeds is that there are plenty of adorable dog sweaters to go around.
