Walk for K9 Cancer

The Morris Animal Foundation’s goal is to help animals enjoy longer, healthier lives. It does this by advancing health and welfare research that protects, treats and cures companion animals, horses and wildlife worldwide.

What it is

Mark L. Morris, Sr., a visionary veterinarian had a vision that there was a need for a foundation that solely addressed animal health and well-being, so therefore The Morris Animal Foundation was established in 1948. Dr. Morris was a humanitarian and animal health pioneer. He was one of the first veterinarians to use diet to control disease.

Why it was founded

Buddy was one of the first guide dogs in the U.S. Buddy suffered from kidney failure and was one of Dr. Moris’ first patients. Buddy’s owner, Morris Frank, then the national ambassador for the Seeing Eye, sought Dr. Morris’ advice. Dr. Morris created a special diet that dramatically improved Buddy’s health. This inspired Frank and his wife, Louise, to can the special food in their kitchen. They soon partnered with the Hill Packing Company to produce what later became the first Hill’s Pet Nutrition Prescription Diet. Dr. Morris used the royalties from that diet to establish Morris Animal Foundation, which originally looked at nutrition in cats and dogs and has expanded to help all animals.

How it’s making a difference

Since it’s inception in 1948 the Morris Foundation conitnues to make a huge impact including overseeing 2000 humane animal health studies. Morris Animal Foundation also manages approximately 300 animal health and welfare research studies at a time at prestigious research institutions, colleges of veterinary medicine and zoos. Each year, they also fund about 70 veterinary student scholar projects. Much of their research has led to animal health breakthroughs in diagnostics, treatments, prevention and cures, providing a healthier future for animals.
