Sign up for email alerts
Sign up for email alerts from your favorite department stores, boutiques and online shops to find out when winter apparel is going on sale. Many stores have “online only” sales, where you can snag stuff that you’d never find at the brick-and-mortar store.

Get out there
Unfortunately, not every deal is going to be found online, so you also have to get out there to scour the clearance racks. You can often find sensational steals if you are willing to search through every sales rack or buy “irregular” or slightly damaged garments. Broken zippers, tears near seams and other minor damage can be repaired very easily.
Ask somebody
Call or approach the store manager and ask specifically for what you need. Many times there’s extra inventory in the back. So if you are looking for something specific, don’t be afraid to speak up and ask.

Size up
Remember, kids grow fast — especially when it comes to boots and shoes. Shop a couple sizes up from the sizes that they are wearing right now. When it comes to coats, bigger is better, since you want something that they can wear for a couple seasons.
