Women’s Health

Women’s health includes health issues that affect women or those assigned female at birth, from fertility issues, birth control, and reproductive health to childbirth, menopause, and breast cancer. When you visit the OB-GYN or go get a mammogram, you’re participating in important women’s health screenings and procedures that can keep you healthy.

Women’s health issues are especially important because of how prevalent they are. Breast cancer accounts for 1 in 3 new cancers in the US each year, according to the American Cancer Society, while the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development estimates that 11 percent of women experience fertility problems. Painful issues like endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) are often under-diagnosed, with women being told their pain is normal or providers dismissing concerns at the doctors office — a major issue for women of color in particular.

From abortion and birth control to breast augmentation and fertility decisions, there’s also a tendency to politicize and control women’s health. Educating yourself on these issues, speaking to your doctor, and keeping up with your regular screenings can help you make informed decisions when it comes to your health.
