Add NBA superstar LeBron James to the lengthy list of celebrities who will be tying the knot in 2012. The Miami Heat hoopster popped the question to his high school sweetheart, Savannah Brinson, during a New Year’s Eve bash over the weekend.
LeBron James is still working on his first championship ring, but the Miami Heat superstar’s longtime girlfriend nabbed a ring of a different kind over the holiday weekend.
An engagement ring!
After celebrating his 27th birthday on Friday, the skyscraping hoopster popped the question to Savannah Brinson at a New Year’s Eve party in Miami on Saturday night.
Cue the congratulatory tweets:
“Happy for my brother @KingJames and sis @SavannahRB on their engagement!!! Extremely happy for them and the good times to come,” Clippers point guard Chris Paul tweeted.
Heat team owner Micky Arison added his congratulations, tweeting, “Congrats to Lebron. @KingJames and Savannah so happy 4 u guys.”
Fellow Basketball Bride LaLa Vasquez (aka Mrs. Carmelo Anthony) chimed in, “CONGRATS are in order!! 2012 has already come in w/a BANG!! Congrats to @KingJames and @SavannahRB on their engagement!! We love u guys!!”
James and Brinson were high school sweethearts back home in Ohio. They are the parents of two sons, 7-year-old LeBron Jr., and Bryce, 4.
The couple hit a bump in the road last summer when celebrity gossips romantically linked LeBron to former American Idol champ Jordin Sparks. Before hooking up with crooner Jason Derulo last year, Jordin was alleged to have been secretly getting busy with LeBron for months.
“The two have been hooking up for a few months,” sports gawker Terez Owens wrote in a scoop published in May 2011.
Clevelanders weren’t the only ones disappointed by James’ decision to ditch his hometown team and “take his talents Down South” to play for the Heat. Brinson wasn’t crazy about the idea of uprooting her family and moving to the Sunshine State either.
She confessed as much in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar magazine in August 2010.
“Personally, Miami was not my favorite place,” Savannah said at the time.
“Vacationing there is great: You go for three days and get some sun and it’s time to go home. It will definitely be an adjustment, but we’ll make it. We’re not complaining. Whatever LeBron felt was comfortable, I’m with him. I just love him so much. We’re soul mates.”
