We love big dogs, but these toy breeds are so cute we can’t get over it.

Affenpinscher
Nicknamed the monkey dog, the affenpinscher is confident and “famously funny,” according to the American Kennel Club.
This little pooch is a fearless watchdog, and though they don’t shed much, they will still need regular grooming.
Yorkshire terrier
If you don’t mind a lot of grooming and a little bit of barking, then the little Yorkie could be the dog for you.
They look like little teddy bears, and Yorkies are described as affectionate and sprightly by the AKC. They can be a little feisty, so might not be the best choice if you have small children.
Toy poodle
Toy poodles are proud, active and very smart, which makes them fabulous watchdogs.
This non-shedding dog is often overbred, so make sure to buy from a reputable breeder to avoid health issues.
Shih tzu
Friendly and active, the shih tzu doesn’t shed much, but needs lots of grooming for all that hair.
This little dog is smart and easily trainable.
Pug
Pugs look a little bit like aliens (this little guy is giving us a total E.T. vibe all wrapped up in a blanket).
The AKC describes them as even-tempered, charming, mischievous and loving — which makes them a great choice for familes with kids and other pets. Just remember it can be hard for them to breathe, so they aren’t much for exercising and need to live in a home that is well ventilated.
Pomeranian
These guys are just little fluff balls of love with a whole lot of personality.
They don’t need much exercise, but the Pomeranian does need some training to avoid being too yappy. Get a good vacuum cleaner, because this little lap dog does shed.
Papillon
Named for their big beautiful butterfly ears, this smart, trainable toy dog is smart, alert and friendly, says the AKC.
They are very devoted and love being the center of attention.
Manchester terrier
The Manchester is spirited, bright, keenly observant and dead loyal, in an independent terrier way — so they make for great watchdogs.
They are a perfect partner for an active owner.
Miniature pinscher
Similar in looks to the Manchester terrier, the miniature pinscher (min pin) is actually not a miniature doberman pinscher at all — it’s a different breed. The high-energy min pin is proud, fearless and fun-loving.
They are an excellent watchdog, but not a good choice for families with small children.
Maltese
Gentle, playful, affectionate, the maltese is fearless in a charming toy-dog way, according to the AKC.
This small white dog is easy to train and has an easygoing personality. Though it takes some work to keep his coat white and lustrous, the Maltese is worth the effort. He’s intelligent, lively and lots of fun.
Japanese chin
The Japenese chin can be lovable, but they can also be a little prissy. As the AKC puts it: “A true aristocrat: charming and loving with those they favor, nobly reserved with strangers.”
They are the definition of a lap dog (a lap is their favorite place), and they shed alot. This toy dog is perfect for seniors and those in apartments.
Italian greyhound
Yes, greyhounds come in small packages, too. This peaceful little dog is extremely clean and doesn’t shed.
They are sensitive, alert, playful and highly affectionate, but best for people without kids because they don’t like chaos. Be prepared to be pestered by outsiders who don’t know the breed: Italian greyhounds are naturally very thin.
Chihuahua
Everybody loves a chihuahua! This tiny little dog requires minimal exercise and maintenance — just lots of love. Chihuahuas are graceful, charming, and sassy, and make a good watchdogs, despite their small stature.
Cavalier King Charles spaniel
I mean, look at that face.
This charmer is very gentle and great with adults, kids and other pets, too. Often confused with the English toy spaniel, this little dog is affectionate, fun and easy to train.
Havanese
The Havanese puppy pictured here is obviously living his best life.
The quirky little Havanese is outgoing, funny, & intelligent — the perfect dog for a family. He gets along well with kids (as long as they aren’t too rough) and other pets, too. These adorable dogs are obedient and high-energy.
