After eight years under the international spotlight, no one would blame President and Michelle Obama for jetting off to some remote exotic island for a couple of years to recover. But we also happen to know that the First Couple is fiercely devoted to their two daughters, and have decided to stay in Washington, D.C. after Obama leaves office, so their younger daughter, Sasha, can finish up high school with her class.
So, now the Obamas have picked a gorgeous mansion in the Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, D.C., which is no stranger to high-profile pols like Ted Kennedy and Donald Rumsfeld. The home they’ve chosen was last sold to former Clinton administration press secretary Joe Lockhart and his Glamour editor wife Giovanna Gray for just over $5 million.
The mansion has a whopping 8,200 square feet over four floors with nine bedrooms and 8 1/2 bathrooms. When you’ve got a full-time Secret Service detail, you need a few extra potties.
The house is undeniably pretty from the street, but wait until you see the interior. It might just make the White House look a little shabby.
Exterior
The house was built in 1928.
Living room
The cool, grey interior is just the right amount of sophisticated, but still inviting.
Fireplace
Here’s where the Obamas will cozy up by the fire.
Kitchen
From the cielings to the wood floors, this kitchen is perfection.
Marble counters
The marble counters and the grey woodwork are giving me all the right feels.
Subway tile
This must be the butler’s pantry.
Dining room
That wood ceiling rocks. Can you even imagine all the cool conversations around this table?
Family room
The light-filled family room has built-in shelves. I hope Michelle keeps the furniture, because it’s amaze.
Sitting area
Perfect area for reading and being generally fabulous.
Master bedroom
Where the presidential magic will happen.
Master bath
Yep, this is a soaking tub fit for our First Lady.
President’s shower
It’s a little weird looking at the president’s future shower, but here it is.
Dressing room
We know Mrs. O has some gorgeous clothes to fill this dressing room with.
Bedroom
This room is perfect for Sasha. Check out the built-in shelves under the windows!
Nursery
The Obamas don’t need the nursery, but could probably use the room for staffers.
Playroom
Ditto for this cute playroom.
Guest room
The Obamas probably need plenty of guest rooms. I wonder if Michelle’s mom will move with them too.
Library
This chic library would make a gorgeous office for FLOTUS.
Another kitchen?
This looks like a totally separate kitchen, maybe for catering and staff?
Wet bar
There’s even a fridge and wet bar off the library space.
Grounds
Plenty of yard to stretch out and entertain.
Patio
I hope Michelle and Barack have many quiet, lovely nights out here together.
Rear exterior
Here’s the rear view of the house.
Courtyard
This courtyard screams for a hoop. Pick up games at the Obama house!
