The breakup of the Spice Girls came as a big shock to all the ’90s girls who followed them. And it turns out that split was a big surprise to four of the five girls, as well.

Melanie Brown, otherwise known as Scary Spice, is finally opening up about the night Geri Halliwell left the group, which also happened to be right in the middle of a tour.
“When Geri left the group, it was bad,” Brown told Larry King. “She left on my birthday, and didn’t tell anybody… just didn’t show up. We had the rest of the tour. The American part of the tour.”
Although the two are friendly now, Brown admitted she was bitter about it “for a long time” and said, “I still remind her of it. Like, I saw her a couple weeks ago and I said, ‘Do you remember when you left on my birthday?'”
Although Halliwell’s departure was abrupt, the split wasn’t all that surprising. Brown said they “fought like cats and dogs” and it was time for the group to end when it did. But they knew they had a short shelf life and they planned accordingly. According to Brown, “We always knew Victoria was going into fashion, Mel C was going into music, Emma went into radio, and I wanted to do a bit of everything.”

The Spice Girls have shot down rumors of another tour, but when they were at the height of their success, they really gave it their all. And Brown said they all hope they did everything they could for both their fans and for women in general.
“We were never relying on our sex appeal,” Brown said. “We kind of relied on how different we were, how outrageous we were. We were the girls doing it for the girls.”
