Mariah Carey knows that she’s been an icon for more than 20 years. She knows she’s inspired millions with her voice and her songs. Apparently, she also knows that her fashion in the ’90s was… less than great.
Recently, the singer was interviewed by PrideSource and they asked her what she thinks “1990 Mariah would think of 2016 Mariah.”

Carey’s answer was completely honest. She said, “I was such a kid, just in over my head, but I knew that I was gonna do this for my life and so I probably would’ve been like, ‘Who does your hair and makeup?’ ‘Cause they had me with some people who didn’t know what they were doing, and I knew it wasn’t really good, and I’d just be like, ‘Who does your lighting, hair and makeup?'”
She also acknowledged that there were a lot of black outfits, but didn’t say why. When asked about it she said, “It was just like, ‘Ahhh,’ such a long story. You don’t even wanna know.”

Two things for Carey. One, now I most certainly do want to know. My hunch is that it had to do with weight, but that may just be my jaded side talking. But two, and more importantly, didn’t we all look terrible in the ’90s? I mean, there was a few years when grown men were walking around with ski goggles on their head during the summer when they were nowhere near a mountain.
Looking back on some of her outfit choices, sure, they don’t look great now, but for the time they were great. She rocked her midriff way before everyone else was doing it. And you could probably find a pair of high-waisted mom jeans at your local Urban Outfitters if you went to look for them today. So Carey really doesn’t need to apologize for her style back then.

What I would listen to, however, is an apology for Glitter and the accompanying Glitter-era Carey. When she’s ready for that, I’m all ears.
