Dr. Phil is inserting himself into the JonBenét Ramsey case

Dr. Phil — yes, that Dr. Phil — has new information on the 20-year-old JonBenét Ramsey case. He sat down with JonBenét’s brother, Burke Ramsey, for his first interview since his sister’s murder. That interview should be emotional enough, but according to InTouch, Dr. Phil has also obtained never-before-heard interrogation tapes of Burke as a child.

“After the murder, Burke was interrogated three times. Once when he was 9, twice when he was 12 — those tapes disappeared,” Dr. Phil tells the mag. “For the first time in 20 years, we’re going to hear from the other person that was in the house the night [JonBenét was murdered].”

The indictment in the trial was unsealed last year, so it’s possible that the tapes were available for public access and Dr. Phil’s team was simply the first to dig through all the evidence. He’ll air the tapes in a three-part special as part of his new season, which he warns viewers is “going to be very difficult to look away [from].”

We’ve seen an interest in true crime thanks to shows like the podcast Serial and Netflix’s Making a Murderer. Is Dr. Phil taking advantage of a media trend or will we actually see new truths come to light? We’ll find out when the show premieres on Sept. 12.
