Multiple sources confirmed to Us Weekly that the couple, who had been dating for about three months, broke it off because Swift was uncomfortable with how public Hiddleston wanted their relationship to be.
Although Swift and Hiddleston started dating in June, they never made an official public appearance together. According to a report in The Sun, Hiddleston asked Swift to accompany him on the red carpet at the Emmys even though she’s never joined a boyfriend on a red carpet before.

An insider says it was that move that made Swift start to doubt the genuineness of their relationship.
“Tom wants their relationship to be public, even asking Taylor to go to the Emmys with him, but Taylor wants to keep her private life private,” the source told The Sun. “Tom’s need for their relationship to be so public so quickly makes her uncomfortable. She tried to be OK with it in the beginning but fears he is in love with the idea of her and not falling in love with her for the right reasons. Taylor is an independent young woman and doesn’t feel like she needs a boyfriend to make her feel complete.”
Although paparazzi photos of Swift and Hiddleston were all over the internet in the beginning of their relationship, they haven’t been photographed together at all since July. The timing of the flood of photos — right as Kim Kardashian released a video showing that Swift had lied about approving a controversial Kanye West lyric about her — has had many fans wondering if their relationship was even real or if it was all a publicity stunt to combat the bad press.
The source says that aspect of the relationship was also getting to Hiddleston.
“Tom is just done with it,” the insider revealed. “It bothers him so much that they’ve become known as this fauxmance laughingstock.”
