As if we didn’t already have enough reasons to love Sara Ramirez, the former Grey’s Anatomy actress just delivered a coming-out announcement so inspiring, it kind of has our heads spinning.
In a speech at the True Colors: 40 to None Summit, a two-day conference that addresses LGBTQ youth homelessness across the country, the notoriously private Ramirez proudly came out as bisexual and queer.
“So many of our youth experiencing homelessness are youth whose lives touch on many intersections — whether they be gender identity, gender expression, race, class, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status,” Ramirez said in her speech on Saturday. “And, because of the intersections that exist in my own life, woman, multiracial woman, woman of color, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant, and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican and Irish sides, I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youths’ voices to be heard and that support our youth in owning their own complex narratives so that we can show up for them in the ways they need us to.”

At this point in her speech, she paused to let the crowd give her a much-deserved cheer and a round of applause. Ramirez, who has not publicly spoken about her own sexuality before, very casually dropped her own coming out into her talk, but it did not go unnoticed. In fact, it totally gave us chills.
And you better believe Ramirez’s loyal fans were in awe of her speech as well. Many took to social media to communicate how proud they were of her and to express gratitude for her work with the LGBTQ community.

“I’m sure you don’t have the time to read all your comments but I have to say, as a Latinx trans-man who was disowned by the Latinx side of my family upon coming out, I thank you,” Elijah Jarlem Rolon commented on Ramirez’s Facebook page. “So many celebrities help out our community but many of them, like the rest of the world, forget about the T in lgbtq and the fact that you shed light on all of us within the community makes my heart swell. You are an incredible actress, singer, and human being. Thank you, so much.”

Juliene Dias wrote, “Hey, Sara! I’m a 26 years old bissexual brazilian woman and I know your work since Calliope at Grey’s and you’ve been inspiring me since then. Your work and all the sensibility you used at Callie helped me discover, accept and love myself. I’m a christian girl from a christian family and I’m not ready to come out yet and I don’t know if I’m ever gonna be. But I’m really, really proud of your courage and strength. You’re a beautiful powerfull woman, and you inspire me every day. Don’t ever stop being yourself, please.”
According to the True Colors Fund website, Ramirez was given the Ally for Equality Award by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation in 2015. She also sits on the True Colors Fund’s Board of Directors.
