Anna Faris and Chris Pratt announced via social media on Sunday that they are legally separating. And no big surprise, the internet died a little inside at the thought of such a seemingly happy Hollywood couple calling it quits.
What you may have missed, though, is the inexplicable way an alarming number of fans responded: by blaming the split on Jennifer Lawrence, someone who simply co-starred in a movie with Pratt but has no reported romantic involvement with the actor, nor have they ever publicly been romantically linked. Not cool, internet. Not cool.

“I don’t know why, but I blame Jennifer Lawrence for Chris and Anna getting divorced,” one Twitter user said. “I can’t believe Chris Pratt and Anna Faris are splitting up, this is all Jennifer Lawrence’s fault,” another complained.

Others predicted it wouldn’t be long before Lawrence and Pratt became “a thing,” and that the split was obviously because of “the way Chris Pratt looked at Jennifer Lawrence in interviews.” There was even reference to supposedly awkward photos of Faris and Lawrence hugging on the red carpet at the premiere of Passengers in December 2016.

Clearly, there are a few big issues to contend with here. First, this is the end of a marriage. No matter who you are, that’s heartbreaking, but it’s no less painful when the general public is wildly (and most likely inaccurately) speculating about the exact reasons for said split.
Secondly, the presumption that Lawrence must be the cause of the split is entirely sexist. These two actors co-starred in a movie together and the fact that people can’t just be let the buck stop there is unfair to both Lawrence and Pratt.

Since Faris and Pratt have indicated this split is mutual and respectful, there’s certainly no reason to jump to the conclusion that Lawrence is somehow involved. Let’s hope this wildly speculative rumor dies quickly so Pratt and Faris can continue the process of their breakup in private and in peace.
