Vanessa Bryant is backtracking on quotes from a magazine interview that paint her as the hardcore gold digger his friends and family have long thought she is.
Vanessa and Kobe Bryant are one of the most controversial couples in the NBA — him for his repeated infidelities and rape accusation and her for her apparent gold-digging ways. After all, Kobe seemingly bought his wife’s forgiveness from that rape accusation with a $4 million ring.
Her recent comments to New York Magazine are doing nothing to dispel that reputation.
As SheKnows reported earlier this week, Vanessa told the mag she would settle for nothing less than a championship from her Lakers player hubby every year.
“I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships,” she said. “If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning championships should happen every single year.”
But Vanessa says she was misquoted and we’ve got it all wrong.
“I’m sad to hear that comments in my New York Magazine interview are being misconstrued and taken out of context,” she told TMZ. “I have and will continue to support my husband’s dreams.”
“I have been with Kobe for 13 years,” she continued. “I accepted his marriage proposal prior to him winning any of his five championships with his teammates.”
“For anyone to think otherwise is wrong. It is not about being married to a ‘winner’ it is about our sacrifice as a family.”
The couple met when Vanessa was just 17 years old, and got engaged just two months before Kobe won his first championship in 2000. They announced their separation in December 2011 but now, “We’re working on things,” Vanessa told the mag.
