Just when we thought we couldn’t love Mila Kunis any more, we dug a little deeper (via Google searches because she doesn’t have any social media accounts — we’ll get into why a little later), and now we’ve officially fallen deep into an obsession (a healthy one!) with her.
We know Kunis as a movie and TV star of varying genres and roles — she’s truly a talented actor — and as the mom of two absolutely adorable kids, Wyatt and Dimitri, whose lives she keeps pretty private. But there’s actually much more to Kunis than meets the eye. For starters, her life is basically a rom-com now (seriously, if you haven’t heard Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s love story, you’re in for a real treat).
Ready to learn some more new things about the woman who pretty much grew up before our eyes on That ’70s Show? Well, we got you covered. For her 40th birthday today on Aug 14, check out the coolest, and wildest, facts about Kunis that you may not have known. From her wedding band story to how she did side hustles while on That 70s Show, we got it all here.
Happy birthday Kunis, here’s why we love you!
A version of this article was originally published in July 2016.
She Had Humble Beginnings
Kunis first got involved in acting at age 9, when her family moved to the United States from Ukraine and her father enrolled her in an acting class he heard about. From there, Kunis got an agent and auditioned into the star she is today.
And, to Kunis, her journey to success is just as crazy as it sounds.
“I have no clue how I got here. I feel as if I tricked a lot of people and I don’t even know how,” she told Stylist in 2011. However, that doesn’t stop her talent and drive from moving forward.
She Didn’t Even Want Her Breakout Role
That ’70s Show has to be the biggest point of change in Kunis’ life. It was a huge boost to her career, and she met her now-husband on the show. It’s safe to say that things would have been much different if she hadn’t taken the role — but that could have easily happened.
“I wanted a different show. I got a different show that day,” Kunis told Howard Stern in 2016. “I got a soap opera with a hot guy in it. The soap opera’s no longer on the air.”
However, with the help of her manager, she made the right choice when they decided to go with the comedy pilot.
She Has a Solid Reason for Skipping Social Media
You might have noticed that Kunis isn't anywhere on social media. And she has a good reason for it.
"[Ashton Kutcher] used to be incredibly forward-thinking with social media, when the intent was to connect to people," she told Cosmopolitan magazine for its August 2018 issue. "But it took an ugly turn and became all about who can be the loudest, who can be the angriest and the most negative. Then it's just not a fun game to play."
She Doesn’t Take Criticism Well
In an interview with James Franco for Interview magazine in 2012, he asked Kunis, "How do you deal with criticism?" And her answer was refreshingly honest.
"As cheesy as it sounds, you deal with it the best that you can," she told Franco. "To be honest, I don’t deal with it well. I can't tell you that I'm like, 'Oh, I'm so great at dealing with it. It's in one ear and out the other!' That would be complete and utter bullshit. But I take it for what it's worth. Sometimes I let it get to me — I have internal dialogues with myself all day long.
"But, you know, people criticize a woman for everything — like, I get criticized for how my hair looks when I go grocery shopping or the fact that I don't wear makeup when I get my nails done. Women get scrutinized all the time for the way they look. So if I can learn to deal with that, then I do believe I can learn to deal with people’s criticisms of my film choices."
She Appreciates Her Ukrainian Roots
Kunis' second child, Dimitri Portwood Kutcher, was born Nov. 30, 2016, and the name Dimitri is most likely in honor of where Kunis was born herself. But as cute as his name may be, don't expect to see pictures of him any time soon.
"We'd like to allow our kids to make their own choices on whether to have a life in the public eye or not," Kunis' husband, Ashton Kutcher, told A Plus at the time. "We don't want to make the choice for them."
She Knew How to Party at the Oscars
After That ’70s Show, Kunis’ career took off yet again when she was cast in 2010’s Black Swan. The role, although challenging, landed her an Academy Award nomination. However, just taking part in award season was enough for her.
“I think I, at the Oscars, had the best time of anybody,” she told Howard Stern in July 2016. “I snuck liquor in, I did shots… I knew I wasn’t going to win.”
Her Love Life’s Basically a Rom-Com
Aside from acting and the impact of film on Kunis' life, her on-screen costar also managed to steal her heart. As if Kutcher being Kunis' first kiss when she was 14 on That '70s Show wasn't already adorable enough, it turns out that their romance has only gotten even cuter over the years. Even if they refused to admit it to themselves in the beginning, their reunion at an award show only proved that they were meant to be.
"I see this guy and I see his back and he's really tall. Then he just turns around and it was literally like if we were in a movie," Kunis told Howard Stern in 2016. "The music would start playing and the violins would go… I think for the first time ever [Ashton] took my breath away… I was like, fuck, he's good-looking."
And then their original friends-with-benefits plan fell through, and the rest is history.
She Dated a Huge Former Child Star
Way before things became official with Kutcher, there was another actor who shared Kunis' life for nearly 10 years: Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin.
"He was huge. You couldn't walk down the street with him," she remembered while talking to Howard Stern. "He always had this weird attraction, like fans just screamed when they saw him! They didn't know how to react. It wasn't like a normal response to a celebrity. Fans responded in a very abnormal way to him."
She’s Not Afraid to Make Mistakes
For Kunis, parenting is a job in and of itself, and she finds it important to take it all just one day at a time.
“I don't think I have it all together. I’m one of those people who takes it one day at a time and makes many mistakes," she shared with Howard Stern in 2016. "And learns fairly quickly… Somehow I would figure it out."
She’s Strong With or Without Hollywood
So, what's next for Mila Kunis? Even she doesn’t know quite yet.
“I want to be a present mom. When I was growing up, both my mom and dad worked full-time. I guess the only thing I can say about that is they worked full-time in one location. I'm never in the same place for more than two months. How am I ever going to have a family like that? You have to make compromises," Kunis told Playboy magazine in 2014. "If that means I do one movie a year, if people still want to see me and hire me and I don't suck by that point, great. But my only source of happiness can't be dependent on something so fickle. And I find this industry to be incredibly fickle."
She Quit Smoking
Kunis has proved her own strengths over time in a number of different ways, including her ability to quit smoking. “I used to smoke… [Now] I’m not a smoker. I think smoking’s gross,” she shared with Howard Stern. “[Quitting] was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.”
And, honestly, we couldn’t be prouder of her for that.
She Really Loves ‘Return to Oz’
One of Kunis’ first family-friendly films was her role in 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful. However, the story also happens to be one of Kunis’ personal favorites.
“I think the first book, when I was 9 years old — full-length book in English — that I read was Return to Oz,” she told BBC News. “As a kid, the first movie that I remember seeing that resonated with me was The Wizard of Oz. I think just visually the color, the spectrum of it, and how fantastical it was and how much you wanted to live in that world, for a 9-year-old, was so magical and so grand, so I have the greatest, fondest memories of it.”
She Struggles to Find Balance
Now that she has two kids, she’s trying to figuring out how to balance both her love for her children and her acting career. And it’s definitely not easy.
“I’ve changed my work schedule a little bit. I think that when I got pregnant with Wyatt, I put so much pressure on myself to figure out, ‘How am I going to balance work and life?’ And I realized it’s impossible,” she said on Live With Kelly. “It literally ate me alive. No one put the pressure on me. I just did it fully to myself.”
She was the Queen of Side Hustles
During the early years of That ’70s Show, Mila Kunis did a few odd jobs on the side, including selling Backstreet Boys prints on eBay with her friend to make extra cash. They made unlicensed shirts, and while Kunis didn’t keep the money, she did show she was a great friend!
She’s a Black Belt
Did you really think Mila Kunis didn’t have a few cool talents up her sleeve? Not only is she trained in martial arts, but she’s also a black belt in Taekwondo.
She’s a Huge ‘Star Trek’ Fan.
We love a fellow “trekkie,” and in 2011, she told GQ all about her love for the franchise. “I’m a massive Trekkie,” she revealed, talking about how she “got into it later than most people.”
She Started A Production Company
Back in 2014, Mila Kunis started a production company known as Orchard Street Productions, along with Susan Curtis, Cami Curtis, and Lisa Sterbakov, per Deadline. They’ve created films like Kunis’ hit film Luckiest Girl Alive, The Los Night, and the show The Masters Of Mini-Golf, per Deadline and Backstage.
She Got Migraines
People who get migraines know the struggle, and know how debilitating it is. However, Kunis’s story with migraines may not be for the faint of heart. Per a previous episode of the 1996 show Loveline, she would have to insert steroid injections straight into her eye to relieve the migraines, per Useless Daily.
She Loves ‘World of Warcraft’
Along with being a Trekkie, Mila Kunis adores the World of Warcraft game. In fact, she said on Hot Ones that she got so addicted to the game, that she had to uninstall it from her computer.
She Got Her Wedding Band Off of Etsy
During a 2016 appearance on Conan, Mila Kunis revealed that she and Ashton Kutcher bought their wedding bands on Etsy. “My husband and I got married … and he got me a beautiful engagement ring. Like, stunning, stunning, stunning,” she said. “But for our wedding bands, for when we got married, I decided to just get them off of Etsy. And so our wedding bands are from Etsy.” (They’re under $100!)
