Celebrities: They’re just like us. How? Summer flings are a very real thing that happens in us common folks’ lives, and celebs are no exception. Of course, celeb summer flings are way more interesting to follow — maybe because we don’t have to personally experience the heartbreak of splitting from someone, even if the relationship lasted a mere few months.
But the quicker a celeb relationship runs its course, the sooner we forget they even happened. Take, for example, Blake Lively and Leonardo DiCaprio (yeah, they were an item!). Now that Lively’s happily married to Ryan Reynolds, what with their two kids and all, who even remembers that she and Leo had a truly eventful and romantic summer together?
There’s plenty more where that came from. Here are 12 celeb couples who had short-lived but steamy summer flings.
A version of this article was originally published in June 2017.
Joe Jonas & Gigi Hadid
Gigi Hadid and Joe Jonas were officially a couple starting June 2015, and while they did make it through the summer, the relationship didn't last much longer than that. The two broke things off in November 2015.Apparently, Jonas wasn't too thrilled that Hadid moved on to Zayn Malik shortly after, telling the Daily Mirror, "I think it’s interesting that she moved on so quickly, I mean it was definitely very quick."
Taylor Swift & Tom Hiddleston
Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston, perhaps the most famous summer lovers in recent memory, first crossed paths on May 3, 2016, at the Met Gala. The two danced the night away while Swift's boyfriend at the time, Calvin Harris, was MIA. Harris and Swift announced their breakup on June 2, and less than two weeks later, on June 15, photos of Swift and Hiddleston locked in a passionate embrace on the shores of Rhode Island hit the press.
Swift and Hiddleston enjoyed a high-profile relationship for the entire summer, complete with an Instagram-official, now-deleted photo set posted by Swift BFF Britany Maack featuring the couple cuddling on deck chairs with Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Fourth of July festivities and Hiddleston wearing an "I heart TS" tank top. As summer drew to a close, however, so did their steamy relationship. On Sept. 6, Us Weekly reported that Swift and Hiddleston had split.
Leonardo DiCaprio & Blake Lively
Did you forget about these two? We almost did, too. DiCaprio and Lively shared a summer romance in 2011 on a whirlwind journey including New York, Cannes and Portofino. Unfortunately, the pair's A-list romance came to an end in early fall, with reports emerging in October that the duo was done.
DiCaprio went back to his modelizer ways, dating a string of impossibly beautiful 20-somethings, while Lively would go on to meet and marry Ryan Reynolds.
Zac Efron & Michelle Rodriguez
This pair rates as one of the more random summer celebrity couples we've seen. Efron and Rodriguez met in Italy in early July 2015 after Rodriguez split from girlfriend Cara Delevingne.
They enjoyed a wild few months of yachts, horseback riding and steamy makeout sessions at nightclubs and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their hot new relationship. The media had a lot to say about their age difference (Rodiguez was 35, Efron, 26), but we don't think age had anything to do with their breakup two months later. Ultimately, their summer fling just fizzled out the way so many others do.
Brooklyn Beckham & Madison Beer
Victoria and David Beckham's son Brooklyn was in a pretty heavy, off-and-on relationship with Chloë Grace Moretz. During one of their breaks, in the summer of 2017, Brooklyn started seeing singer Madison Beer. They didn't exactly put a label on it, but they were definitely interested in each other and hanging out.
"We are definitely crushing on each other," Beer said in an AOL Build Series interview in July 2017. "We hang out almost every day." They stopped hanging a month later, though, and called it off due to distance. Oh well.
Scott Disick & Bella Thorne
In one of the briefest celeb summer flings, it was reported Scott Disick and Bella Thorne hooked up for a hot three days in May 2017 before parting ways.
The KUWTK star and ex-boyfriend of Kourtney Kardashian was spotted flying to Cannes with Thorne and then making out with her at the film festival hot spot. Their fling didn't last long, however — Disick was seen kissing his ex, Chloé Bartoli, just a day later.
In an interview on The Jenny McCarthy Show in July 2017, however, Thorne clarified that she was "never with him sexually."
Kaley Cuoco & Henry Cavill
The Superman leading man and the star of The Big BangTheory made headlines for their summer fling, which lasted a whopping 10 days back in 2013. Cuoco has said about their high-profile, paparazzi-smothered relationship, "I had no one following me until I met Superman. I've been in this business for 20 years, and my whole life, I could go anywhere, do anything. There had not been one paparazzi photo of me until like several months ago. The recognition was crazy."
Many speculated that the relationship was nothing more than PR for Cavill's upcoming film, but nonetheless, the pair split after less than two weeks and Cuoco went on to meet her eventual husband, Ryan Sweeting. Cuoco and Sweeting got engaged after dating for just three months (and filed for divorce after almost two years of marriage).
Ellie Goulding & Niall Horan
UK singers Niall Horan and Ellie Goulding got together for a dramatic — if short-lived — romance a few years ago. Goulding has stated that she and Horan went on a handful of "really fun" dates in the summer of 2015, but both eventually moved on to other partners. Goulding moved on to date British martial arts athlete Bobby Rich, while Horan may or may not be dating Hailee Steinfeld.
Nina Dobrev & Zedd
Dobrev appeared to be breaking one of the most important rules of #GirlCode when it was rumored that she was dating BFF Selena Gomez's ex, Russian record producer Zedd.
The two have denied dating, but they definitely appeared to be getting cozy in the summer of 2015.
Justin Bieber & Sofia Richie
The Canadian singer and the daughter of legendary crooner Lionel Richie were an item for a brief week during the summer of 2016. Although their summer romance was apparently pretty hot and heavy, Bieber reportedly broke off the budding relationship after a week because he felt that Richie was getting more serious than he was, and he wasn't ready for a relationship quite yet.
Demi Lovato & Trace Cyrus
Despite a four-year age difference, Cyrus (then 20) and Lovato (then just 16) grew their longtime friendship into a brief romance during the summer of 2009. In July, however, Cyrus confirmed that the two had split, saying in an interview with People, "We gave it a shot and that's all you can do."Demo Lovato went on to have a relationship with Joe Jonas, then MMA fighter Guilherme “Bomba” Vasconcelos. Reports now peg Lovato as single for the summer — and it's exactly what she wants.
"I'm not suffering because I'm alone," she told InStyle in March. "There were many years I was in a relationship and I wasn't learning about myself. Now I'm learning about what I like, what I need and what I want."
Lea Michele & Robert Buckley
Costars Lea Michele and Robert Buckley met on the set of their Hulu sci-fi show Dimension 404 and began dating in early summer 2016. The two were Instagram official in no time, but their summer fling ended early, with outlets reporting the end of their relationship in early July.
Not All Summer Flings End
Of course, not all summer flings are fiery and short-lived. George and Amal Clooney, Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello, and Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus are just a few couples who began their relationships in the hot summer months but managed to keep those sparks burning years later. All three of these couples are still together today.
