Being a digital mom: 3 Ways to brand yourself

Your brand is your blog and your blog is your brand. How can you make sure this is done properly? Here are three ways.

You are the brand of your blog

Your brand is your blog and your blog is your brand. How can you make sure this is done properly? Here are three ways.

When I first started to blog, I never understood how to brand myself properly. It’s an “odd” thing, branding yourself as a mom blogger because in all reality, your blog is your brand and your brand is your blog. (It’s a mouthful, I know.)  When I first started to think about branding, I remember thinking, “But I’m not a company or a celebrity or a fashion house. I’m me. I’m my blog.” And there was my answer — I needed to brand myself, as my blog. I started looking at other mom bloggers to see what they were doing and who was doing it the best.

Ree Drummond (otherwise known as the Pioneer Woman) stood out to me as someone who was doing it exceptionally.

But what is branding?

I love Seth Godin’s definition of branding: A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.

How does this play into mom blogging?

It’s the content we share on our blogs that make mom bloggers connect, engage and bring in an audience. Someone makes the decision to click on our blog, and so, the better, more defined story, the easier it is to brand yourself from your blog.

I have branded myself as a boy-mom fashionista. If you come on MomGenerations.com, you see quickly and clearly that I’m the mom of four boys and I’m a lover of all things fashion and beauty.

How can you brand yourself?

Here are three things you should be thinking about:

1

Niche

Find what it is you like to blog about the most, and niche yourself in the category. Is it fashion? Fitness? Food? Crafting? DIY? Beauty? It’s so much easier to brand yourself as the “fitness mom” or the “foodie mom” if it’s something that you’re blogging about every single day. Once you have a defined niche, it’s also easier to create ongoing content for branding purposes. So really think hard about what it is you love and what is reflected through your blog.

2

Video

Before I started honing in on the fashion/beauty, I discovered video. Video is a wonderful way to brand yourself because your followers get a chance to see a personality, a true personality off the pages of your blog.

If you’re looking to brand yourself as someone on camera, start doing videos as often as you can. It’s an easy way to really start to change things up and hone in on your true personality.

3

Offline

Find ways to bring your blog offline, through events, TV broadcasts, contributing to newspaper/magazines, webisode series, etc. Take your online mom blogging brand and bring it offline, somewhere else, where more and more people will have the chance to see you. It’s important to grow your brand and yourself in many different directions, so be bold with the opportunities.
