Like most things in life accents are subjective. Some of us are drawn to twangs that others might not find appealing at all.
Again, like most things in life, there’s a poll for accents. International city guide publication Time Out has released the results of its 2015 Dating Survey, which includes a section on which accents people find the most irresistible. The magazine, which has sites in 36 countries, asked 11,000 people what nationality of person they would most want to whisper sweet nothings in their ear.
Coming out on top is the British accent — presumably meaning the English accent, as Scottish came eighth in the list. (It is, indeed, an ongoing mission of ours to teach the rest of the world that the United Kingdom consists of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland as well as England).
What’s caused this love for Anglophiles? Or rather, who? Is it the posh lilt of Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley and Rosamund Pike? Or the Northern tones of Tess Daly, Sheridan Smith and the Gallagher brothers? Whatever the reason, we’ll take it.
