This is the time of year we’re all itching to get away from the cold weather and long, gloomy days. But if a tropical vacation isn’t in the cards for your family, here are fun ways to have a staycation during your time off.
Have a fiesta
The most fun part about vacationing is sipping sweet cocktails and dining on delicious food with no guilt. Why must this exist only in another location? Sit in the comfort of your home and whip up some delicious margaritas, serve chips and guacamole, make homemade fish tacos and call it a festive fiesta — who says you can’t enjoy vacation food at home?
Plan a fun activity
While on vacation, planning day trips, exploring the city and being adventurous are always on the agenda. So why isn’t that something we take advantage of during our time off at home? Have each family member choose an activity, and all partake together. You’ll bond as a family and most likely learn something new! Fun ideas are to play outside, go bowling, visit a museum or aquarium, go to the movies, have a bonfire and roast marshmallows and try out a new restaurant.
Indoor games
If you have kids, plan indoor activities to keep them busy. Make crafts together, bake some creative desserts, build a difficult jigsaw puzzle or plan a movie night. If you don’t have kids, plan a romantic dinner with your spouse, play board games like Scrabble or Scattergories, get active and play Wii or dance or have a beer tasting or wine and cheese pairing just for the two of you.
Get some exercise
No matter what climate you live in, there’s always something active to do outside. If it’s a cold, go cross country skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, build a snowman or have a snowball fight. If you live in a warm climate, go hiking, bike riding, kayaking or rollerblading.
The comforts of home
Bring the hotel to your home. Here are a few simple ways to create hotel ambiance:
- Dim lighting always sets the mood. Spread out several scented candles and enjoy the aroma of them, too.
- Make your bed more comfortable by adding luxury bedding and pillows.
- Purchase plush robes and towels, for that true hotel elegance. Then take a bubble bath with spa-quality bubble baths and bath salts.
- Put fresh flowers around your home for that bright, welcoming feel.
