What is “No-poo?

Over the past few weeks, we have been hearing the words “No-poo” in the same sentence as “trend” and “hair care.” What IS this new trend, and more importantly, what does poo have to do with it?! Sounds like something to stay far away from. Turns out, “No-poo” simply represents the recent anti-shampoo fad. Still sounds a little scary, but it has gotten our attention…

The UltimateCoupons blog wrote about the benefits of giving up shampoo cold turkey. After further research, it does seem that this idea isn’t nearly as crazy as it sounds.

Giving it up for good

Some people have officially parted ways with their shampoo bottles and turned to the sink. Once your hair gets used to its natural oils, it starts to look increasingly less greasy (and more healthy). True, you do have to get past this initial stage. Remember, you can’t wash your hair without water. If you decide to go “no-poo,” it’s definitely important to rinse your hair with water as often as you would normally wash it. Your hair will eventually become much more manageable, softer and almost hassle-free. It will also be easier to style.

Taking small steps

If this trend intrigues you but you can’t see yourself giving up the hair products for good, there are alternative ways to reach similar results. Try going a week (or as long as you can) without washing your hair. After you have, you will notice differences in your hair’s texture. You will also notice that it will only be necessary to wash your hair every four days or so after the hiatus. Best of all? Your hair will look and feel as clean as it did when you were washing every day.

Some people in the “No-poo” world swear by baking soda and vinegar to keep their locks looking luscious. You can mix about one tablespoon of baking soda into a cup of water and use that to rinse. This does take care of excess oil, but tends to smell not so sweet.

Dry shampoos

If you still can’t bare to go that long without washing your hair, you do have other options. Dry shampoos are sold in drugstores and are very affordable. They work for all hair colors and types AND don’t require water! Dry shampoos are great because they eliminate oil and smell fresh. Our favorite is Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder, which can be found at Sephora and comes in different bottles for people with blonde, brown and black hair. Devacare is also noteworthy because they make a “No-poo” conditioner for curls. The product contains natural ingredients so that your hair is not damaged.

The “no-poo” trend isn’t so scary after all. To top it off, imagine all the money you will save on shampoo and other hair products. The less you put in your hair, the healthier it will be.
