Congratulations to Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler on their growing family of five! Cavallari and Cutler have just announced the birth and the name of their third child in an adorable Instagram post.
Married since 2013, former reality star Cavallari and Chicago Bears quarterback Cutler are already the proud parents of two boys: Camden Jack Cutler, 3, and Jaxon Wyatt Cutler, 1. Saylor James Cutler joined the happy little family on Monday afternoon, as confirmed in Cavallari’s official Instagram announcement.

There’s been great speculation about what Cavallari would name baby number three since she’s been keeping her cards close to her chest for most of her pregnancy. Cavallari did hint that she planned to name her third baby after a dog two months ago since she just “loved” the name. With that teaser, we can only assume Saylor was the name of the dog, and what a great name it is.

Cavallari’s name choice for her third baby is an interesting pick, and not just because of its possible canine inspiration. The name Saylor is not a traditionally popular one, meaning Cavallari’s daughter may not find other little girls sharing her name in class. According to Baby Name Science, Saylor is “very unique,” appearing for the first time at position number 2105 on the baby name charts in 1999. By 2012, Saylor peaked in popularity at number 1101 on the national baby girl name chart.
As atypical as it may be, Christie Brinkley chose the same stunning name with a different spelling for her daughter, Sailor Brinkley Cook, 17 years ago. Liv Tyler gave the same name with the Brinkley spelling to her second son born in 2015, Sailor Gene Gardner.

And that’s exactly what makes Cavallari’s baby name choice so interesting: It’s perfectly adorable and perfectly gender-neutral. The same name has been used by a supermodel’s daughter and a superstar’s son, and it works well both ways.
Cavallari paired her daughter’s name with a more traditionally masculine middle name, James, to complete the gender-neutral theme. James has been going strong since 1910, most recently ranking at number 14 on the national baby boy name chart in 2012. Caitlyn Jenner’s son Brandon used the same gender-fluid baby name combo for his daughter Eva James months ago, and Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds named their daughter James back in February.
Cavallari may be on to something. Based on a recent BabyCenter survey, 2015 was dubbed the “year of the gender-neutral baby.” Because of major shifts in our cultural perception, including the transformation of Caitlyn Jenner, millennial parents are moving toward a more open-minded and accepting baby naming style. According to BabyCenter stats, more parents are using gender-neutral baby names in 2015 compared to 2014, with names like Amari, Carter, Phoenix, Quinn, Reese, Sawyer and Taylor leading the pack. Right alongside Cavallari, other celebrity couples are starting to spur on the trend — like Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s daughter Wyatt and Milla Jovovich’s daughter Dashiel, a variation on a Scottish boy’s name.

If you’re one of the many expecting parents who can’t imagine choosing a conventionally masculine or feminine name for your new baby, you’re in good company. If these stats are any indication, we can expect to see baby naming rules shift or disappear altogether within the next few years. For new parents, this means many more baby names to choose from with less judgment on the “right” and “wrong” way to name a baby.
