Lake Superior Zoo opened in 1923 and sits at the base of Spirit Mountain, covering over 16 scenic acres. This is one “don’t miss” Duluth attraction.

This zoo has a nice collection of animals including Alaskan grizzly bears, Kodiak bears, African lions, Siberian tigers, polar bears and snow leopards. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen and pack a few bottles of water for your day at the zoo.
Located near the jungle playground is the Happy Zoo Train. The conductor narrates the ride sharing zoo stories and animal facts. This ride does cost a couple of dollars.
Bringing a picnic lunch for your day at the zoo is ideal, especially on a nice day, but if you forget to pack food, don’t despair. The Safari Cafe, in the lobby of the main building, carries all of your kids’ favorite snacks of popcorn, pretzels and cotton candy as well as lunch items such as hot dogs and cheeseburgers. There are also kid’s meal options called Safari Meals which include a hot dog or cheese sandwich, chips, drink and a cookie ($4).
While some zoos are purely observational, the Lake Superior Zoo encourages learning and it shows through the various enrichment activities which range from animals feedings to trainings and other programs. Children enjoy getting involved with the hands-on activities of feeding and interacting with the barnyard animals including a llama, a donkey and a pygmy goat.
The kids also love learning about the endangered and threatened animals that the zoo cares for. Some of the rescued friends include peregrine falcons, snow leopards, ring-tailed lemurs, white-napped cranes and bald eagles.
Year-round, Lake Superior Zoo hosts seasonal activities and events for almost every notable holiday, so check the website’s calendar often. If you’re looking for a fun summer activity for the kids, the zoo also offers age-appropriate Summer Activity Camp for kids from one-year-old up to age 12.
